Re: Tech Applications Classes for Parents

From: Bernard John Poole pitt.edu>

In Albania. earlier this year (2008) I was assigned a computer lab which
had Linux and Open Office, but the language used throughout the interface
was French (the lab was donated to Tirana University by the French
government to promote French Studies). I was comfortable with French
myself since I taught it for many years in England, but my Albanian
students preferred Italian. So we switched to a lab donated by the
Italian government instead, and there the OS was Windows, MS Office was
the productivity suite, and the interface language was Italian.

In India I came across only Windows and MS Office, but obviously I didn't
visit that many institutions. I think Microsoft had already made a
significant investment in India tech prior to my time there.

Bernie,

With all your travels to India, Albania, and everywhere else you may go, do you
find a lot of users of OpenOffice in the developing world?

If you're interested in making versions of your tutorials for OOo, let me know
off-list, and I'll be happy to help answer any technical questions that I can.

I have read that Atomic Learning has developed these types of materials,
but they are not free. My experience with Atomic Learning is that their
work is generally quite good and their prices are reasonable, but I do not
have specific knowledge of either the quality or price of this product. I
believe they worked with ISTE in its production, so that is a good sign.

Ariva,

Which version of Word are you using? Are you using a PC?

If so do this:

Click the Start button, then click Control Panel.
Under Clock, Language, and Regional Options, click Change Display
Language.
Note In Classic view, double-click Regional and Language Options,
and then click the Keyboards and Languages tab.
On the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click the Keyboard and
Languages tab, then click Change Keyboards.
On the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box, click the Language
Bar tab.
In the Language Bar section, check if the Hidden option is selected. If
it is, select either Floating on Desktop or Docked in the taskbar. If
Floating on Desktop or Docked in the taskbar is already selected, see
Enable a keyboard layout (

Assuming you are working from Windows OS, Xenu will do that for you. It
can't check links in Flash files, but will check regular hyperlinks and
will print out several different reports. It's free, too.

Tom Snyder has a great feudal simulation in the "Decisions Decisions"
series. It would be perfect for middle schoolers and would take a number of
days to play, although it would be an hour or two a day, not a full school
day.

Jane,

Thanks for taking time to respond.

Your solution was exactly what I ended up doing.

It is very clear to me we must find another solution for Student
Information Services.

It will be expensive to make the transition.

I would enjoy any suggestions from other small districts.

Best Wishes,

  Re: How do you write?

I know I write more because the editing process is so much easier. Like
you, my transition was gradual. But now it is just as easy to type as
to write - although truly reflective writing is still better by hand at
least at first.

And this is my first exposure to email since Sept 12!
