On Friday afternoon June 6 at the Chicago Blues Fest Crossroads Stage, do
not miss the three-act West Side Revue from noon through 5, organized by
singer-drummer Larry Taylor.
The West Side is known for musicians with hard-hitting rhythms and gutsy
soulful singing. The area gave rise to such blues giants as HowlinÂ’ Wolf,
Magic Sam, Otis Rush and Jimmy Dawkins. By highlighting its lesser-known
talented musicians, Taylor hopes to bring high esteem and good feelings to
his neighborhood.
In the West and South Side tradition, a neighborhood band plays all night
while a series of singers step up to the mic. The first act in the West
Side Revue features Joe BÂ’s band with guest singers include ZZ Hill Jr,
whose new album produced by Twist Turner is gaining popularity on the
blues charts; Al Harris, a popular community singer who takes after Otis
Redding; Willie D, who knocks people out with his version of McKinley
Mitchell’s “End of the Rainbow,” and guitar thriller Ice Mike. The act is
a tribute to singer JumpinÂ’ Willie Cobbs, whose running-in-place on stage
would get dancers moving to a funky beat. Cobbs, an Arkansas farmer who
moved to the big city, ran his own tire shop at 3501 Madison before his
death last year at 74.

Smitty And The General
Smitty Jenkins was a cab driver. Had been ever since he left school. His
father had passed from sugar, as they called it back then, and left him his
Taxi. He worked Oak Cliff, and South Dallas, where the white cab drivers
wouldn't go. That's all he did 7 days a week, except for playing a little
blues in the juke joints around Hall & Thomas Street. That is till he up and
joined the service during WWII, where he proudly dug latrine trenches for
the white troops. "Somebody's got to do it," he would often say. It just
didn't bother Smitty at all, he was doing his duty, and he was proud to serve.
What did bother Smitty though was how the Gov't did everything they could to
not give him and other blacks the same benefits that the white soldiers got
when they returned home. Smitty would often say, "They's a G.I Bill, and a
Colored G.I. Bill, and they wrote ours in disappearing ink." He would often
ramble on, to anyone who would listen, about how unfair the whole deal was,
because as he put it, "Those bullets and bombs was color-blind jack, and
would kill your ass dead, no matter what shade you was. I ain't telling you
'bout something I heard, I'm telling you what I know."

Courtesy of Beatle Bob:
Jerry Cole died Wednesday at his home in Corona,
California. Jerry's wife Gale was with him when he suffered a massive
heart attack. Jerry was 68 years old and is survived by Gale and their
daughters, Monique and Katrina, and son, Cane. Jerry's other son, Keith,
died just a year earlier at the age of 28.
Jerry Coletta was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1939. After moving to
Chicago with his mother, he started cutting his musical chops in the
gritty Chicago blues scene of the fifties. It wasn't long...

Minor correction but Johnny Otis;' hit was with his big band and featured
his saxophonist and I would assume Bill Doggett's version was a stripped
down version of Otis' hit. It was only a couple years after Otis had
recorded with Lester Young. Both recordings were sax focused. So they
should not be included with Gatton and Musselwhite.

Times are tough and many clubs are closing or reporting smaller turn
outs and fewer quality acts touring in their markets. Here’s a sampling
of comments from Bookers about what’s going on in their dark corner of
the music biz:
*Florida's live music scene is feeling the effects of high fuel costs.
Patrons are not coming to shows and acts can't justify the 1200+ mile
round trip our geography requires with fewer solid paying gigs, and
higher transportation costs. Definitely a domino effect. We're closing
Bamboo Room at least for the summer.
Russell Hibbard
Bamboo Room, Lake Worth, FL
*As a matter of fact, going back to late 2005 (32 concerts), we have had
three of our four smallest audiences this year. I don't know what to
attribute it to: gas prices, economy, apathy... whatever it is, I sure
would like to find the reason and correct the problem.
Bailey Jones
Sundilla Acoustic Concert Series, Auburn, AL
