On this 30th day of April in 1896 Piedmont Blues and Gospel guitarist
Reverend Blind Gary Davis was born in South Carolina. One of the most
renowned Piedmont style guitarists,Gary Davis' influence is
incalculable.
Davis was nearly blind at birth, and was totally blind by the time he
reached his teens. He began to teach himself guitar at age 6 and by the
time he was 20 was one of the best guitarists in Blues.Davis recorded
in the 30s,but he never received royalties, and his mistrust of record
companies kept him out of the studio for nearly 20 years, with the
exception of 2 songs he recorded in 1949.

Now that we got that purist thing out of the way...

We need to weed out the 'Texites" who seem to think Texas has some kind of
patent on blues, especially blues guitar. :-)

LW 'saw Little FEat last night - they got it going on but sure was better
with Lowell'

Since even the purists here on this list are open minded, and everyone seems
to agree that borders are for fences and Time Magazine covers--not
music--I'd like to share a slab of down home (as in DFW) home grown country
& western blues, courtesy of Homer Henderson & The Dalworthington Garden
Boys. The "boys" are performing one of Homer's classic regional hits
entitled "Picking Up Beer Cans On The Highway Now," a job that is bound to
give the best of us a case of the blues, even if you can say you're self
employed. Btw, doing a jam up job on steel guitar is the late (and very
missed) Robin Syler, the guitarist that I posted a youtube clip of the other
day--saying he showed SRV a lot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojAeX338lkY

BBC: 4 Part Documentary On Dinah Washington

When it comes to divas, past or present, Dinah Washington was one of the
best to ever belt out a tune (imo). If you're not all that familiar with
her, then you owe it to your ears to go and watch this excellent 4 part
series on her that was a presentation of the BBC.

Re: Sean Costello Wasn't About Pleasing The Purists

No, I think you are mistaken. I posted, "A purist who thinks that only
black people can play blues is a racist and bigot." Notice I didn't
say "ALL purists...."? Anybody who judges people by the color of their
skin is a racist and a bigot. There are plenty of purists who do not, and
some....(OMG)...are even my friends.

I don't know you or your personal choices but what I have seen here on
Blues-L you seem like an alright guy, for a PURIST. Could be wrong.... ;)

hey I agree w/you Pat,
....and each of these except Lightnin' also thought AC was a big part of their influence....
Lightnin', on the other hand, was AC's biggest influence, probably, since he was Albert's "Uncle Sam Hopkins"....his mama's brother.....
AC used to talk about sittin' on the porch w/"my uncle Sam" and play his self-made 'diddy bow' along with Sam when AC was 8yrs old......

whacho think about that??????

I hear Lightnin' Hopkins, Jimmy Vaughan, Otis Rush, Magic Sam, etc.
