  Damon Fowler In Chicago

Author: E. Willett
Date: May 28, 2008 21:38

Our frequent Suncoast performer and Chicago native Steve Arvey will be appearing at the (new I think) Maxwell St. Stage, and (good news for Floridians) our own Damon Fowler will be joining him. If you get a chance to see them, give 'em your ears! Damon is a very talented guitarist/singer, and about as nice a guy as you'll ever meet. I'm SO glad to see him get wider exposure!

I wonder if you have to paper train it so it doesn't leave little silicon chips around the house?

  McGriff Story In Newsweek

Author: c.n.
Date: May 28, 2008 20:56

Anytime a blues or jazz artist who thrived outside of the spotlight and hype
of the megastars gets some mainstream ink, it's a good thing; Unfortunately
it often comes on the heals of their passing, but none the less....as the
old saying goes, it beats a blank.

This time around it's the recently departed organ master Jimmy McGriff who
gets a turn. http://www.newsweek.com/id/138872

Crawfish Fest and British invasion /

Author: Barbara Hammerman

Alan

What a pleasure it was and what a great time we all had. Yes! Looking
forward to doing more musical adventure travel with you and your group.

Wish that you could be with us this weekend in Sussex County New Jersey for
Michael Arnone's Crawfish Fest. You would feel you had carried Louisiana
right out to the Northeast. Great food and music and vibe.

If others in Blues-L land are headed that way to the Crawfish festival, come
say hello to us over at the Delta Music Experience Pavilion. Bob Porter is
holding down the MC duties and we'd all love to see you.
Check out the schedule at
_http://www.crawfishfest.com/shedule.htm_
(http://www.crawfishfest.com/shedule.htm)

I heard from Michael that there are already 600 campSITES reserved! I
took a look on the Jazz Fest music boards and there is a whole section now of
Threadheads for Crawfish Fest. They estimate about 500 from that group alone
will be there. From the huge dance hall, to the lawn main stage, over to our
covered DME stage, the excellent Kids Stage..the fabulous Louisiana food
vendors-- well I could go on.... it's just a wonderful environment. Surely one of
the top fests we attend.

The Night Cal Valentine Blew Oakland Wide Open !

Author: c.n.
Date: May 28, 2008 06:40

First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the late, great CAL VALENTINE, another in that
bevy of great musicians whose fame never quite rose to the heights of their
talent, for whatever reason.

Cal was born right here in Dallas Texas. He got started in music back in the
50s when he met another student, the late Al TNT Braggs, and they formed a
band together. Cal's brother, Robert Lee Valentine, was also a singer, and
you can see Cal and his brother (singing lead vocals) in this youtube clip
pulled from the 1957 Dallas made indi film/ cult classic "Rock Baby Rock."
The band, at variuos times, was called the Five Notes, The Five Masks, and
the Five Stars, as they are in this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Az7593hkhZU

Cal and his brother Robert also had a band called "The Valentines" who
record six sides for "King Records." After Cal relocated to Oakland,
California he started a band called "The Right Kind," where he recorded a
handful of sides for the Galaxy record label. You can pick up one of those
45s right now on ebay...for, oh say, $140 Buy It Now !
http://tinyurl.com/4me88x Or you can hear the B side of that 45 on this
compilation CD "Get Your Lie Straight." http://tinyurl.com/4859p5
