Today In Blues - May 18
© 2004 L.W. "Junior" Jackson
On this 18th day of May in 1900 Blues guitarist Little Son Joe was
born Ernest Lawler in Hughes,AR.
Little Son Joe was Memphis Minnie`s third guitarist-husband.The
first,Casey Bill Weldon, was a member of The Memphis Jug Band and did
not play a part in Minnie`s recording career. The 2nd was Kansas Joe
McCoy,who played in a duo with Minnie and was an important part in
Minnie`s career. The couple moved to Chicago in 1930 and became an
important role in the urbanization of rural Blues. They had several
big hits, including "Bumble Bee" and "Me and My Chauffer
Blues",which became Blues classics.

Hi All,
I was in NOLA for Jazz Fest this year.
It was my first time in 2 years to NOLA, and my 5th JF.
Though I couldn't move around much the first week
due to the heavy thunderstorms, there were still lots
I could see and hear, and I enjoyed every minute of
my stay in the city.
Here are some of the photos I took during my stay for
those interested.

Randy Newman
Art Neville set with Aaron Neville sitting in for two numbers
Voice of Wetlands All-stars
John Boutte
Egg Yolk Jubilee
James "Sugar Boy" Crawford (w/ Davell) at Ponderosa Stomp
and many, many more...

Here's an early video of The Paladins doing "Hold On, Get Ready." Later on
they became better known as a rockabilly band, more than a blues band, but
as this clip shows, they knew their way around the blues, no problemo.

Btw, back in the late 80s or early 90s that same lineup played the
Greenville Ave Bar & Grill, a gig I was lucky enough to be at, and with them
on that tour, and all night long on the GB&G stage with the Paladins, was
the late, great HOLLYWOOD FATS. A cassette tape turned up recently of that
show, and Richard Chalk has just released it on TopCat Records, which may be
of interest to you H.FATS fans (warning: the sound quality is iffy, but the
chops are sure fine). chuck

Yes... and when my dad got out of the Army in 1945 he was making a "cool"
$35 a week working in a shoe factory... in 1951, he was up to a solid $85 a week
because he had a large family (4) to support...
Folks who work in an office or factory may be pulling down $750 to $1200 a
week here in the East, but a pack of smokes is $5 (I guess) and a gallon of
gas is $3.75 here in Joisey (but they pump it for you)... I can remember in
1972 when gas was $0.299 a gallon and my Lucky Strikes were 30 cents a pack.
Back in the day, rule of thumb was a new car might cost you 1/2 years
salary... My 1969 fully loaded Camaro was $3200 and my wife's Pymouth Duster was
$2200.... Man, I wish I had that Camaro NOW!
It's all relative. I guess $500 may buy less but we don't have to work as
long to save or earn it...

I just got the Summer issue of American Legacy ("The magazine of African-American History & Culture") and there is plenty of good stuff in there.
There is an article on Billie Holliday and the release of a five CD set of rare recordings. There is an article on the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a nice piece on Odetta, an article on string bands and a lengthy article on women big band leaders that will have Fred Dabney wild with excitement.
There is also a piece on John Work III detailing his work for the Library of Congress on the historic Delta work that Allan Lomax took credit for and gave Work little mention in his book.
It's a terrific issue and I urge you to hunt it down.
