Arnett Cobb- another name long forgotten, alas. Delightful to see a
rhythm section supporting a horn and not trying to be the star instead
of the backing group. A near lost art now...

The cover is funny too...

are pledge drives down everywhere ?

Author: c.n.
Date: May 16, 2008 19:48

I keep hearing, via talk shows that I listen to in order to stay awake (I
have to be awake just to yell at and pound on the dash as I am driving) that
there really isn't a recession in this country, that's just some hyperbole
spun by those who want America to fail. The local shows even go as far as to
say that the DFW area is even doing better than the rest of the country, as
far as jobless rates and homes being lost...but even with that, I read on
Don O's site that last weeks pledge drive was the worst one in over 10 years.

So if it is that bad here, I can only imagine what it is like in other
areas. Can anyone tell a significant difference in donations, or has anyone
who is a regular pledger had to opt out this time around because of rising
fuel / food costs? Private emails if you prefer.

From Musician's Friend:

1960, before launching his solo career, Ben E. King cuts his final two
singles with The Drifters ? "I Count the Tears" will top out at #17,
while "Save The Last Dance For Me" will score big by going all the way
to the top of the pop and R&B charts ?

1965, The Beatles cut the single "Ticket to Ride" ? it?s the band's
first song to feature Paul McCartney on lead guitar ? FBI agents visit
Wand Records investigating the lyrics to the song "Louie Louie" by the
Kingsmen ? c?mon guys, nobody could get the words off the record ? that
didn?t stop any of us from singing it at parties ? name another song
that?s easier to fake the lyrics to ?

1966, the Byrd?s single "Eight Miles High" is banned by some radio
stations because of the lyrics? alleged drug references ? as it turns
out, Gene Clark, who crafted the lyrics, claims they?re about the
group's airborne 1965 English tour ? according to Clark, airliners fly
at six or seven miles up, but eight miles high just sounds better ?

1967, the BBC announces a ban on the Beatles song "A Day In The Life" ?
it?s concerned that the lyrics will promote drug use ? upon hearing of
the ban John and Paul respond, "The laugh is that Paul and...

  EGO: blues column growth

Author: Forcella, Domenic , Public Safety
Date: May 16, 2008 12:03

My Blues Beat column is now running in ShoreView. A paper as the name
would imply on the Connecticut shore, communities east of New Haven.
They have a 60,000 circulation and the it's a weekend product, wildly
popular, I am told. The Editor seems happy with it.
Add that to the 4 dailies and the sometimes home delivery weeklies and
the audience grows. Let's hope the readers get out to shows and
concerts

Blues Beat appears each week in 4 daily papers covering the following
cities and surrounding areas: New Britain, Middletown, Bristol,
Torrington.
