Whew. If we're keeping this thread going, I would like to add that my
choices for today are Buddy Guy and Lurrie Bell. For the past, Earl Hooker.
That said, I feel the need to add two more names to those mentioned by al
the others
Mike Blooomfield, and
Hound Dog Taylor
One a helluva great guitar player in all styles. The other just plain fun!

Deb, you're making me hungry!!!
Kevin, Dick Shurman added a few to your great list...
"Not around or not playing like they used to"
Louis Myers, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Johnny Littlejohn, Andrew Brown, Willie
Johnson, Matt Murphy, Pat Hare, Lee Cooper, Wayne Bennett, Left Hand Frank
(very underrated but fabulous), Hip Linkchain…
"Favorite today - I like the guys with a distinctive sound"
Smiley Tillmon, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Guy King, Jimi “Prime Time” Smith
(plays the best Eddie Taylor stuff when he feels like it) and Jimmy Burns
(not fancy but sophisticated, versatile and very melodic) I’m sure I’m
forgetting a bunch…
He said I did great on my originals guesses of Lurrie Bell, Albert
Collins, Magic Slim, Eddie C Campbell, Jody Williams, and Billy Flynn.... 'cept I
forgot Otis Rush.

A question primarily for my SF BAY AREA blues friends: As many of you know, Rene Solis, our wonderful friend and fabulous musician died recently and far too soon. As you also know, some if the "benefits " for similar situations have seen well intentioned artists donating their time and contributing money only to fine that that what was "benefited" out of the carefully chosen word "proceeds" was little if anything to what donors and ticket buyers were told, or implied, would be the recipient.
I do NOT say that is the case here, however I have received several notices, & announcements for this benefit concert to benefit The Rene Solis Foundation. I have written several email asking for simple, basic information as I am interested in making a donation. Want to know who are the organizers of the benefit? What is the Foundation tax exempt ID number? What is the address where I can mail a donation?
I have received no response of any kind except more generic email urging people to 'buy tickets'.
Does anyone on Blues -L know anything that can help shed light on this?
Am I too cautious? Perhaps. But those of us who knew Rene know he was one of the most generous people around: generous with his time, his music, his ideas and his compassion. I do not doubt that he,or his family or his friends could have set up a Foundation to carry on good work in his name. In one email there was mention of assisting family with medical bills. Fine and appropriate. The words 'from the proceeds' are a bit of a red flag for me. I am unfortunately aware of too many situations where 'the proceeds' were next to nothing after 'expenses' .
I 'd just like to know some core info like who is in charge of The Rene Solis Foundation, what is ID # where do I send the check.
If it isn't an actual 'foundation' but just a phrase being used, cool, but still want to know. Like maybe it's a bank account in family's name and control - also cool. We just need some transparency on these sorts of activities.
Unfornately I imagine we all have our stories where the contributions we thought we were making to the family 'went missing'.
Thanks for whatever help and insight you can provide.
Barbara

I think Albert Collins would be on the not around any more list :P So no
we haven't gone to see him BUT one time we were driving to a show somewhere
in Chicago and as we drove by a White Castle, Dick Shurman said that's
where he and Albert went for sliders...
That's as close as I'll get!
Hugs back~ Brat :)

Well I haven't asked Dick Shurman who his fave is but I don't think he'd
give just one answer. Off the top of my head, I know he loves Lurrie Bell,

8 BLUES GREATS ON ONE STAGE AT AFTER PARTY CONCERT 2010 -REGGIE'S MUSIC
JOINT, Saturday Night, June 12, 2010:
Hello Friends,
This is a special shout out to the incredible Barry Dolins, producer of the
Chicago Blues Festival. Barry's commitment to the highest quality of blues
artists has kept this festival as one of the top attractions in the blues
world. American Blues Legends wants to personally thank him for bringing out
such artists as Bobby Parker. Without the vision and hard work of the
Chicago Blues Festival and Barry Dolins it would be impossible for ABL to put
Bobby Parker and his ilk on our shows.
The hippest blues club event of the year is rapidly approaching on
Saturday, June 12 (from 9 pm til 1:30 am). This will be a star-studded affair. Why
go to a regular blues bar to see one band when...
