Naw, that's backwards! What it really means is it would take
$5,759.50 in 2007 to buy what $500 dollars would buy back in 1945. If
you still had that $500 bill, it would only buy you $57.59 worth of
what you could buy with it in 1945. Or, to put it in 2008 terms,
about half a tank of gas. ;)
If you use the $31K GDP figure, the $500 would only buy you 1/62 of
it's original value. About $8. Er, I mean, two gallons of gas.

When the Johnny Otis tune, Willie & The Hand Jive, hit the airwaves and
record stores, it was considered very controversial at the time. Not in all
corners, just some. Those same corners where they didn't want to show Elvis
below the waist, or have a married couple in the same bed on TV. A paranoid
little corner, that one. It seems that some were worried that Hand Jive was
slang for masturbation, or some such nonsense.

As some Johnny Otis fans know, that song was hardly his most controversial.
No, the one that was didn't get recorded till some 20 yrs later in 1977--and
featured sometimes Gospel singer Dorothy Morrison on lead vocals, with the
young and gifted Shuggie Otis on guitar, along with some very nice alto sax
work (especially the intro) by the legendary Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson.
Johnny was on vibes on this track, one that the title alone was
controversial, "Ni**er, Please." Make of what you will, but there is no
doubt that it turned me on to Dorothy Morrison..who could sing her butt off.

Here's a link to the Palm Beach Post story:

They got most of it right, except for that blurb about Muddy Waters playing
there. Big Bill has played there three or four times but of course Muddy
was not able to appear unfortunately.
Bamboo Room has been my home away from home for a long while. I live in
the same apartment building that Russell kept the bands in and have gotten
to meet an amazing cross section of musicians while just coming home from
work in the afternoon and finding them sitting in the lawn chair outside my
door. Pinetop, James Cotton, Bobby Rush, Uppity Blues Women (Gaye came
downstairs one time and handed me one of her new cds, where else do you get
that?) It was a truly big influence on the area and on me. The regulars
are gonna be at a loss for a venue to satisfy their needs. Russell has
spoiled us all, musicians and patrons alike.
