Damn. My cheapest quote for a rebuilt was $400.00 and add labor.
And that was if I bought one myself. What junk yard are you using and do
they carry Chevy parts?

Mines got about 125K.

How about $160 + $13 shipping + Tax?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/A-C-Compressor-1998-2003-Chevy-S10-GMC-S15-Isuzu-...

That one is for the 2.2 Liter engine. You can probably find others on the
Web. I don't have any connection or experience with any suppliers including
the one above. Of course, first you'll want to verify your compressor is
bad.

You'll want to stick with the newer R134a refrigerant. Even if you could
find a older compressor, rebuilt or in good shape, and could figure out how
to get it mounted in your pickup, it would have been designed for R12. You
might be able to use it with R134a, I don't know.

Some people think compressors don't last as long with R134a as they did with
R12. Other people, like Grumpy, think that the newer compressors are just
made cheaper. If I had to bet, I'd go with the second theory.

Check eBay Motors and the Web. Here is a rebuilt compressor for $175 + $15:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-01-NISSAN-MAXIMA-RE-MANUFACTURED-A-C-COMPRESSO...

I don't have any connection or experience with any suppliers including the
one above. On my project list is replacing the A/C compressor on a 1990
Acura Integra GS. It is the only thing on the vehicle that doesn't work.

You might ask if the guys at Nippon Motorworks in Oak Hill would install it
for you . They really know Nissans and Toyotas.

I added austin.autos to this reply. It is the proper newsgroup for this
discussion.

Best of Luck, and let us know how it goes.

I haven't been following this thread very closely, but over the weekend,
I found out that I needed an exhaust manifold for an older Honda that
I'm trying to get rid of. I did a google search on "used Honda exhaust
manifold" and came up with another search engine that is tied to salvage
yards across the country. It listed product in stock as well as contact
info and price of this part. After using this search engine, I
immediately received about 30 emails confirming availability and the
least expensive yard called me this morning. The part is on the way
without ever calling a salvage yard directly. I didn't know this kind
of thing existed, but was quite pleased with the results. You might go
this route for the compressor.
