I've been watching the new Food TV Show "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives"
and have really been wanting to try a real diner. Do we have one in
Austin?

I am sure there are others, but Starseeds at 24th and IH35 is
diner like, but you may not enjoy the experience there.
The Jims restaurants remind me of old time diners, just
bigger. I think it has to do with the menu and the way the
waitresses act, especially the one at the Y in Oak Hill.
If you go out to Manor, Cafe 290 is a real good example of a
good ol fashioned Diner.

Austin's Diner on Burnet is very close. Has the counter as well as
table service and includes questionable health department
qualifications at no extra cost.
A group I meet with every Tuesday used to eat there. I finally got to
where I told the waitress "I'll have whatever you are going to bring
me anyway."
We have since moved to Triumph Cafe on Spicewood springs. Triumph Cafe
is certainly cleaner.
Waffle House is also a "classic" diner. There is one on east Ben White
(71) around the intersection with Riverside. Many people don't like
Waffle House. It is what it is.

A real classic diner has good short order food, usually original in some
way. Austin's has mediocre food indistinguishable from a jillion other
mediocre places.

There have been some responses listing Waffle House as one of the real
diners. I'd have to say they are a real diner, but not necessarily
one of the great ones that food network TV show tries to highlight.
There are two in Austin - one on 71 between 35 and 183, the other is
on 290, east of 183,
They have 24-hour service, cooked to order food, and generally tasty
stuff. I've eaten in their namesakes before on the east coast with
generally better results. The better results included better taste,
and consistent timing in bringing the meal together at one time.
As a "good" diner, the have fresh ingredients, friendly &
knowledgeable staff, decent prices, and reasonably quick service.

That's the place. Great food, nice people. So far superior to the greasy
crap most places shovel out that they're in a league of their own,
diner-wise. It's an embarrassment to even mention a crummy little joint like
Waffle House in the same thread.

Or, if you prefer real food prepared to order from fresh ingredients by
people who actually know how to cook, try the Counter Diner.
