Vaguely saw on rec.scuba this morning that Curtis or someone thought their
server had deleted rec.scuba. Now seems that it has happened to me.

Anyone else have trouble?

Well, we're back, and had an awesome trip. Managed to squeeze in some diving
between wineries which made it all the better...

Rottnest
First up we did a day trip with Perth Diving Academy, two dives out at Rotto
(see I'm learning)... The Lionfish IV is a great boat, plenty of room,
showers on board, hot meals cooked onboard, the lot. Everything was well
organised - most of the crew were young, but really seemed to know what they
were doing. We found them a very professional and businesslike organisation.

First dive was at 'Star Picket', a rocky patch with the usual features, swim
throughs, overhangs etc etc. Plenty of sea life, and heard whalesong for the
first time in my life. There was a 2 ish meter swell running so it was a bit
surgey, although lovely and peaceful a bit deeper. A great dive all in all.
10+ meters vis, water 15-16 degrees.

A reverse thermocline, any ideas about the physics behind it

Next door neighbour stupidly dropped his car keys into his farm dam while
out on his kayak. Knowing I was a diver he asked if I could try and find
them. OK we are 670m but I have dived at higher altitudes and the dam was
only 7-8ms deep so no problems.

Interestingly the water temp at the surface was about 5C and than I hit a
distinct thermocline at 3ms and the temp was 8C. Surely even with not much
wind the colder heavier water should sink below the warmer water. The dam in
question is quite large probably 1/2 a hectare and has got good inflow from
a small stream. Wondered how the warm water could sit on the bottom even
knowing that Sydney's bad smog is caused by an inversion layer where cold
air traps the warm air and pollution in the basin.

Anybody else experienced this and any theories on why it can happen

PS I soon got out of the water without his keys, far to bloody cold and he
can afford some new ones. Only had a 5mm Farmer John with hood

  Diving last weekend

The weather cooperated for a change and a bunch of
us got a couple of good dives in on Saturday.

We did the Fawkner(44M) and the Rotomahana(39M) with
Dive Victoria. The visibility wasn't great, somewhere
around 5-10M on the Fawkner and a bit better on the
Rotomahana. The Fawkner isn't in particularly good
shape, but the boilers and parts of what I suspect was
the pilot house were semi-intact. There's a photo
of the pilot house at:
http://goanna.cs.rmit.edu.au/~gingrich/new_dive_photos/victoria.html

The shot hit the wreck about mid-ship on the port side
so it was fairly easy to find our way around the wreck.
One member of the team was experimenting with more
conservative profiles after some skin bends so we only
spent 20 minutes on the bottom and had a liesurely 25
minute ascent. (Only O2 deco gas)

  GEAR BAG - advice !

Author: Hi-Soft
Date: Jul 28, 2008 00:55

Hey guys,

I'm in the market for a new gear bag...since after my last dive, all my gear
( incl. dry clothes etc. ) got soaked..

My current gear bag (Mares), whilst convenient in size, and compartments, in
a vented bottom type.... so no good if leaving the bag on the floor at "Dive
Vic", or on the boat...

Just wondering what most of you use..and are happy or not happy with..

Was thinking og getting a "Dry Bag" type...but so far I haven't been able to
find one that has anythingother than one main compartment.. I really want a
bag that has at least a few separate sections, so as to be able to keep
things organized..

My current bag is about 800mm long and has to separate end sections, great
for gloves, booties, Divelog, knifes etc..and main section large enough for
BCD, fins, mask etc...though a bit tight for a 7mm suit...

Also, wouln't mind the convenience of rollers too...

So ultimately, waterproof, with a few separate sections, large enough for a
full set of gear, and on rollers too..

Any advice appreciated..

esim. Vapaavuori helsinkikeskeisen ydinintonsa ja Suomen maakuntien
syöntiinsä potkun ottaa? Nimittäin näiden kaikien taustasponsorit kun
ymmärtääkseni on JO valmiiksi lehdistölle tiedotettuna! Mitä hyötyä edes
olisi lain kirjaimella, jossei asiasta kaikkein kiinnostuneimmille , eli
äänestäjille asti sponsseista realityä tulisi? Ai niin pahus tosiaan, ei ne
tulekkaan!.. ..(
