How did Whincup cockup and Parity?

Author: Snapper
Date: Sep 18, 2008 20:17

Reading today's paper an article talks about how Whincup fucked up when leading
the race, and thus handing the win to Tander.

What happened?

Also, Whincup made the comment that "this should shut them up about the parity
issues".

Holden has won the championship for at least the past two years (my memory
doesn't go back any further). Apparently Holden wants to either get more power
or to nobble the Falcons.

This is one of the reasons why this category of racing is fast becoming a
non-sport to me. Maybe others feel the same way. I dunno. Whatever, if Holden
cannot supply equipment to allow the Fords to be raced against competitively,
then who's fault is that? They all have to run virtually identical cars, other
than basic body shape. And even then that's not a given as the racing Holdens
aren't the same dimensions as the road going ones upon which they're based.

So much for "production based" racing, huh?

I'd love to see a return to the Group C or even Group A style of race cars,
where they are based on what is actually being driven on our roads, then given
some slicks, loud exhausts and body work to make them look hot and fast, but
which have minimal aerodymanic effect.

Another reason why I've largely lost interest in the V8s. They'll bring out the
pace car if someone farts and causes a mess.

Fuck, it was bad enough on Sunday night when they started the fucking F1 GP in
Italy under a fucking pace car.

I mean, really.

I didn't watch the race. So how was it apart from that pace car bullshit?

I was considering a Bathurst Barby this year, but I think that I may give it a
miss. It's an excuse to drink piss with the lads but if it's gonna be like
previous years when more than ten percent of the race is under pace car control
and that it turns into a series of sprints, then why bother with it? They might
as well have 4 x 250km races, two on Saturday and two on Sunday.

WAAAAAAAAHHHHH.. my shitheap cant keep up with Winterbottom, so all the
Fords should be penalised.

One tenth of one second per 60 seconds. (or one blink of an eye) ...
For fucks sake, Scaife, if you lost 3 pounds from your ego, you'd be up
there with Frosty.

ITS A CAR RACE. SO RACE!. Someone will win, and someone will lose.

I guess the has-been has to get his name in the paper somehow.

Who's the reigning touring car champ? Who's on top of the current points
table?

And yet they still whine like a Sailsbury diff....

Unbelievable.... (hang on, it's scaife. It's believable.)

  The Bathurst Boozers Bamboozled?

It seems that the rockapes who'll descend on the Mount (if one can "descend" on
a mount other than from an aircraft), will be limited to a slab of beer a day.
My god, how will they cope?

I would have thought that they would have wet and dry areas. Last year the place
was abominable. Pissheads fucking it up for everyone else. And most of the
ferals only there to trash other peoples' property.

They should do what they do at every other sporting event in Oz - no alcohol to
be brought in. Only sold at outlets and limited to x cans per person and opened
on sale.

If they had a wet area, a few high pressure water monitors set up in strategic
locations to repel the invaders if they tried to spread their "socialness" into
the quiet areas and an electrificed chain mesh fence would be a great start.

Thank god I'm getting too old for this crap. I couldn't care less if it fucked
the weekend on the Mount. Plenty of people stay away because of this bullshit.
They may return if they knew that they would be able to spend a weekend watching
racing and chatting about it over a quiet drink around the campfire afterwards.
And to be able to use facilities that haven't been vandalised or defaced (or
defecated upon) in any way, and to get a decent night's sleep.

Article in the paper yesterday - DJR is taking the V8 organisers to court over
restraint of trade and other issues following on from a ban to stop him using
specific parts in the race cars.

I thought that the rules and regs meant that they had to use only approved bits
and pieces, including specified diff and gearbox ratios for each track. The
basis is to make them equal and to allow the public that appreciates this form
of motorsport to better equate to them similar to their not so recent days
playing with similar race vehicles, Scalectrix racing car sets.

It reminds of the days when Brock would rock up with new you beaut bits and
pieces and the opposition would then challenge it via the CAMS system of the
time.

That Brock used to do the work and homologation for racing often was
conveniently ignored, maybe cos he had first dibs at the new goodies.

  Channel 7 and the V8's

Author: Harold Hughes

So channel 7 got the rights and bragged they would have 130 hours of
motorsport. Did this include ad breaks?

Seems all they do it rattle on about HRT between races. Channel 10
may not have had the support races but they did show these on the off
weekends.

At least with Ten you could turn the telly on at 3pm on the sunday of a
race round and ten would have the races from 3-5pm. It wasn't cut
short for other sports.

With Channel 7 you have to have a tv guide with you to know what time
it is on.

Maybe Ten saw the cracks appearing before anyone else and jumped from
the sinking ship.

And for those interested todays round is on 7 from 4.30 till 6 AFTER
the AFL

  Yet another Brock Biography

Author: Snapper

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24082024-5006016,00.html

Interesting read, if nothing else but to recap on his life.

Most of what is in this online article has been covered in Bill Tuckey's "The
Rise and Fall of Peter Brock".

I wonder if they'll go much further than what Tuckey did. In the book's foreward
Tuckey said that he had to leave a lot out, because the defammation laws of the
day would have crucified him.

Brock's "nickname" mule for his mechanics was anything but endearing. He had a
disdain for them as many would attest to. They also resented the term. Brock had
this way of offending people who help to make him what he was, but for whatever
reason, whatever attracted them to the man, they came back for more. None more
so than Harvey. Perkins copped three years of it and had enough after 84,
particularly when that quack he was hanging out with started to make decisions
that would affect the race team's operations.

That and the polariser, of course.

  Brock Special on ABC

Author: Snapper
Date: Jul 15, 2008 18:01

Did any of you watch that special on Peter Brock on the ABC last night? I caught
the last bits of it.

From what I saw of it it sounds like that Bill Tuckey could well do a makeover
of his book "The Rise and Fall of Peter Brock". In it he said at the start that
there was a lot of stuff that couldn't be used because of defammation laws. Now
given that the guy's dead and that the laws have changed somewhat since the book
was written, it could become a nice little earner for him, and maybe to dispel
the myths about the guy.

As his uncle said, "Brock never had to account for or be responsible for
anything." He always had people around to do things for him, take the fall for
him, deal with confrontational issues for him. During the HDT days that was John
Harvey.

Brock lived on his name, his reputation and he had the usual hangers-on who
pretty well ensured that his life was an easy one. Harvey and a guy named Neil
"Part" Burns were largely responsible for what came out of HDT and for what
happened on the track, other than Brock's own driving skills. That much is
documented. But there is obviously a hell of a lot that isn't.
