Hello,

If the Bible is misinterpreted, it can present some weird ideas. What
if the Bible really didn't teach a young universe and earth, would
such people still pursue the line of reasoning of such things?

The fact is, the Bible DOES NOT teach of a young universe. It in no
way gives the age of the universe. Here is the proof. Ge 1:1,2

"1. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the
surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the
waters." (NIV)

Notice it doesn't say when the earth was created, nor how long it took
God to make it. It simply acknowledges that God made it (and the rest
of the universe), and right in the beginning the earth was quite 'raw'
looking.

Starting with verse 3, this already created raw earth of verse 1,2 is
being prepared for eventual human habitation. The writer of Genesis
divides those time periods up into unspecified periods of time called
a "day", and gives a total of 6 creative 'days' to complete the
project. (based on the use of the word "day" in Genesis, there is no
reason to automatically assume they are 24 hours 'days')

Where some people become confused, is when they try to put verses 1,2
with verse 3, thus make verses 1,2 part of the "first day". (Ge 2:3)
They then do computations and come up with the concept that the
earth's age is in thousands of years, instead of billions of years.
But the error is to put verses 1,2 with the "first day" verses.

Verses 1,2 are introductory verses, showing us that the universe did
not pop into existence on its own. Verse 3 begins with discussing an
already created earth. Just what time interval occurred from when God
created the universe and the earth of verses 1,2, to when in verse 3
He started doing things on and to the earth in order to make it
suitable for life, the Bible doesn't say.

Thus if science says that the earth and universe are billions of years
old, then the Bible would have no problem with those figures, since it
doesn't say one way or the other. And based on the sciences that God
gave us, the evidence overwhelmingly points to an 'old earth' and
universe.

Sincerely, James
