it's a minor bingle. the front bumper mount isn't even deformed. of
course the airbags didn't go off.

Klompmeester's explanation is correct - it's the rate of deceleration
that triggers them. they are supposedly calibrated to trigger when
that rate reaches a threshold considered likely to cause head injury.
the minor damage in the photo would be nowhere near that.

There's no way that car *impacted* the bus at 60km/h. That's looks more in
the vicinity of 15-20km/h. It may have been travelling at 60 before the
driver braked, but actual impact at that speed would have caused a lot more
damage than that (unless the bus was driving away from her at about 45km/h
at the time)

Anyone remember the "airbag" going off in the "Family Truckster" in
Lampoon's Vacation, which was little more than a large garbage bag? Did any
Aussies actually get that joke back in 1983? We didn't see airbags for
another 10 years beyond that.

I believe it's supposed to be 40kph for Australia but, as other people have
pointed out, it's more to do with the rate of decelleration.

Looking at your pics it's clear the bus impacted above the bumper where the
impact sensors are located and the decelleration was not as rapid as it
could have been in most normal accidents.

Airbags generally aren't configured to go off at a set speed but rather a
set impact force as there are circumstances where an impact might occur
where the deployment of the airbags would do more harm than good.

I can't tell you what that vehicle hit, but I certainly can tell you that it
wasn't hard, and it wasn't anywhere near 60km/h.

Toby, After what you said about yanks having a tendency to not use their
seat-belts I decided to look on my daily travels. I drive around all day
on light deliveries. After driving all day and looking at every car I
could when I thought of it I did see 4 motorist without belts. I would'nt
say that is such a huge amount to say that yanks have the propensity to
not wear belts. I know you like pick on yanks when you can, but thought
you would like the correct info. Scott

Do they still have those seat belt anchorages in the top of the door frame
over there?

You know, the ones that pull right out of the door if you put a wheel up a
gutter? :)
