1/4 mile claims

Does anyone remember that "general rule" formula that estimates a
quarter mile time based on nothing but power and weight?

A friend of a friend had an ECU reflash and the other usual things
people do to modern cars (exhaust, cold air, etc) and now gets 277kW
measured at the wheels in his Chrysler 300C SRT.

He reckons he'll run mid 12s, but will find out for sure this
Wednesday night at Eastern Creek.

There's *way* too many variables for a rule of thumb formula to be anywhere
near accurate, but I would think that for a car the weight of a 300C making
& 370 horsepower to do a mid 12 second pass he'd need a 150 mile per hour
tail wind and have a sail the size of the Queen Mary bolted to it's roof :)

Mid to high 13's might be somewhere closer to his mark, which would still be
pretty respectable for a car the likes of a 300C.

AFAIK there isn't one that works. Most do the reverse... ie they
estimate power from time and terminal velocity (knowing the weight).

Much better to use a G Tech.... http://www.gtech.ablissworld.com/

I haven't used that particular one but the original model worked
pretty well and was heaps cheaper... daresay there's plenty of 'em on
ebay.

I'll definitely let him know about that :-)

Yeah mid 13s was my guess. I remember talking to a guy who often built
race engines years ago and he said breaking the 14 barrier is pretty
easy, but breaking the 13 is rather more radical in terms of what you
need under the bonnet. Then breaking the 12 you're getting well away
from having a streetable vehicle.

I'll ask. He seems like the bling type.

Wow, very interesting. I would've loved one of those back when I had a
car that had any measurable performance :-)

Update: Apparently he already has some 20s on it. He went out and
bought some 22s only to find they won't fit on his SRT because the
brake caliper is somehow in the way :-)

Some tool on ebay is selling a smaller merc ( 1970's), lowered on 20"
wheels and when questioned about sale with no roadworthy the claim was
it would pass...
However the wheels certainly wont and it sounds like the springs were
cut so if and when it sells ( he wants 7k for a 1.5 car) someone will
discover bling aint the thing .Now apart from looks why on...
