My old Hilux ( 84 LN65 2.4 diesel ) has started making "clack - clack"
noises especially loud when backing off , it disapears when I'm coasting
with the clutch in.
At first I thought it was the gearbox as there is a (different) noise in 5th
when under power, but the other day the clac-clack started. Perhaps there is
a seperate problem withe the gearbox.(??)
A friend suggested checking out the uni's, which I did and I couldn't find
anything wrong but I did notice there seems to be an awfull lot of backlash
in the diff, so I supported the rear axle on blocks so the wheels can spin
and ran the engine with it in gear. I didn't realy want to get under it of
course, but it did seem to me that most (maybee all) of the noise is coming
from the rear.I decided to drain the diff oil to see if there is any metal
in it and sure enough there was a couple of chunks stuck to the magnet in
the drain plug.
Toyhatsu have diff centres for $550 (2nd hand I presume). Can centres be
back-yard fitted, or is there things that need to be adjusted by a diff
bloke?
