DESPERATE drivers are roaring off without paying for petrol in a crime surge
costing service stations up to $300,000 a week.
.
.
In response, BP is looking to roll out automatic number-plate recognition
cameras to black-list vehicles involved in thefts.
ANPR cameras were first installed in Melbourne in 2005.
Mobil is also testing the systems at three of its stations, following
anti-theft successes in Britain, where almost all stations have the
equipment.
The ANPR cameras record vehicle number plates at station entrances, and
alert staff if the vehicle has been involved in a drive-off or petrol theft.
If an alarm within the station operator's booth sounds, the operator can
decline to activate the bowser and ask the driver about the previous theft;
ask the driver to pay before fuel is supplied; or phone the police.

In the 90's my wife brother had a new Canter as a work vehicle, the POS
was flat out at 80 kph making it next to useless for country work which
he had to do occasionally.
I managed to "tweak" it into doing 100kph but the fuel consumption went
nuts so I had to "untweak" it:-)

That probably would have made the company that owned the truck happier :)

Some of their big stuff is pretty average.
I was looking at one a few weeks ago at some place while picking up some
parts, and it needed *major* repairs. Apparently it's driver didn't see a
speed bump and hit it at about 40km/h, and that busted the engine off it's
mounts. To be precise, the *alloy* mounts broke in half on both sides, the
engine fell over and snapped the bell housing, fucked the clutch, input
shaft of the trans, punched a bowling ball sized hole in the radiator and
busted all the pump and accessory drive stuff as the donk hit the chassis
rails.
Close to 60 large worth of damage according to the repairer, and the "bump"
apparently wasn't enough to bounce the driver off his seat :)
