I don't suppose you used enough/long enough to be able to measure fuel
consumption at idle? Just curious to know because I've always wondered
how long it would take to use up a tank just by idling.
On that topic, one gauge I always wished I could have is a digital
read out of how many millilitres per second (or whatever scale is
best) is currently being used by the engine.

Well after 10 long years, Outlook Express is finally dead... is anyone else
using the new Windows Live Mail? I don't know when it became available for
Windows XP users (I know that Vista has always had it), but this thing is
great. It's so much better, faster, than OE. It even has the same
Vista-look maximize/minimize buttons on the top right corner of the window
(except when you maximize the window - then it reverts to the XP style
ones). Thank you Microsoft for bringing this to XP! There is no longer any
reason to use OE whatsoever... I wish there was a way to uninstall it.

My venerable garage jack now has about half the travel it used to have - the ram
simply doesn't travel any further due presumably to low fluid level. It looks
kinda depleted when I peer in the filler hole.
The label says "fill only with hydraulic jack fluid - NOT brake fluid". The
local mech says ATF is fine, which would be convenient as I have TQD on the
shelf. Anyone have an informed view? TIA

Use hydraulic fluid.
You can buy generic hydraulic fluid from most auto parts outlets, and it's
usually sold by the litre as "Hydraulic Jack Oil", however that's usually an
expensive way to buy it. A litre bottle from Bursons or Repco will run
between 10-15 bucks, whereas I buy 25 litre containers of Iso-32 & Iso-68
hydraulic fluid from my local Pirtek for 45 bucks a drum. Admittedly I use
the shit like water, but they sell it in 5 litre containers for around the
same price as Repco will sell you a litre of the Jack oil stuff.
If it's a quality jack then replace the seals and fill it with some Iso-32
fluid and it'll work like a charm. If it's a Chinese thing just keep topping
it up with trans fluid and wipe up the occasional puddle, as that's most
likely what it had in it from new anyway :)
