A HELICOPTER crew involved in the search for a stunt plane missing off
southeast Queensland early this afternoon says plane wreckage has been
been found.
A search was launched after a Russian-built Yak 52 carrying two men on
a joyflight disappeared off Jumpinpin Bar, between north and south
Stradbroke Island, about 12.30pm (AEST) today.
The plane had left Archerfield airport, west of Brisbane, at 11.43am
on a one-hour flight but failed to return.
RACQ CareFlight spokesman Brian Russell said one of the organisation's
two helicopters involved in the search spotted small pieces of what
was thought to be aircraft wreckage late this afternoon.
Australian Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (AusSAR) spokesman
Tracey Jiggins later confirmed some debris had been found.
"It hasn't been positively identified yet but we believe it may have
come from the missing aircraft," she told AAP.
Asked what kind of debris had been found, she said: "a blade".
The search has now been handed over the the Gold Coast Water Police,
Ms Jiggins said.
