They don't much around in China

Hijacker killed after taking Australians hostage in China

10 Australian tourists taken hostage in China have been released.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) has confirmed that a hijacker
took 10 Australian tourists hostage in China before police shot and
killed him.

All the Australians are now safe, and are heading to Shanghai tonight
where they will meet Australian Government officials.

A DFAT spokeswoman says the tourists were on a bus in the city of Xi'an
in north-west China, when the man - reportedly carrying explosives -
boarded the tourist bus.

Nine of the hostages were released but a 48-year-old woman from New
South Wales was held.

Chinese police agreed to let the hijacker, Xia Tao, change buses and
head to the airport before shooting and killing him as he approached the
toll station, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

In statement Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said he was pleased
the situation was resolved so quickly and the hostages were safe.

Take you back to April 1978 when one Dominic Spranza took a female hostage
at knife point on board a Pan Am B747SP at Sydney Airport with a demand to
be flown to Rome then onto Moscow. After a senior Commonwealth Police
officer was able to grab the female from the would be hijacker, he then
produced a home made bomb and threaten to light the wick.

NSW Police when negotiating with Spranza, were forced to shot him when he
held a lighted match to the wick. He had a further smaller explosive device
in his shirt pocket.

He died later that night in hospital from his injuries

I'm inclined to the view that such people should be taken out at the
earliest opportunity, rather than waiting for situation to become
urgent. Taking them out may not then be possible to achieve.

If people don't want to be shot, they shouldn't make threats about
bombs, whether real or otherwise.

Sylvia.

Which places you fairly and squarely in the Taliban camp -

"The hardline Taliban regime in Afghanistan sought permission yesterday to make
an extraordinary flight to Britain as the hostages held on board a Boeing 727 at
Stansted airport approached a fourth day in captivity.
