What are the rules for lights on an airplane

I know airplanes are required to have lights on them (both the red and
green position lights and the bright lights that help other planes see
where the aircraft is) but can anyone tell me where on the plane different
lights are supposed to go?

Hi Jonathan.

FYI, 'Port' is to the left and 'Starboard' is to the right of the
aircraft from the pilot's seat.

aeroplanes that only fly during the day have no requirements to have
lights at all.

for aircraft that fly at night
white light to the rear (usually on the rudder)
red light on the left wingtip
green light on the right wingtip
red flashing light on the fuselage.
