Wanaka

Anybody got any experience with the various touring organisations that
arrange Wanaka tours? If so, would you do it this way again? Anyone
got experience with doing it as a self-drive operation (eg in a hire
car or hire camper van).
Would you do it that way again?
Any other comments? We are going next year and we are in the early
planning stages.
Regards

Coop

Queenstown is the closest airport to Wanaka that you can fly direct from
Australia. However, if you thinking of hiring a campervan then flying into
Dunedin or Christchurch may give you more options.

The scenery is world-class. If the weather is good take a flight in the
Mount Cook area. Some aircraft drop you down onto the Tasman Glacier, which
is a unique experience.

Support that completely - the Kiwi campervan option is a
brilliant way to go Coop. They are well organized. ...

I did the campervan thing over two weeks for the last show. Despite
both of us having apprehensions about being tucked into a small room
(a Ford/Merc/Fiat Transit-type van) for days on end, and a wife under
the impression a 3 Star motel is camping, we were rather surprised it
was so comfortable and so quick. The biggest hassle was turning the
table into a bed every night and undoing it in the morning, but it
only took a couple of minutes. It was easier to open the rear doors to
flip the mattresses, but stepping out into the cold ... brrr! A
slightly larger van with an upper bunk would have solved that, but
slowed progress - and risked tree contact in camp grounds and roadside
stops.

Yep, that's the one. We will be spending about two weeks over there,
maybe a little longer. I gather there is an airforce museum at
Christchurch, and that there is another at the northern tip of the
south island (can't remember the name now) so will want to look in on
them too.
Thanks for the info,

Hmmm. Sounds like fun. At least this time I won't disgrace myself by
referring to it as Lake Whackitty- Poo..... :-)
