I've just booked tickets on the V Australia web site for travel from
Sydney to LA in March and there are limited tickets available for $580 - I
couldn't believe it! No wonder Qantas are so anxious to get the 777.
That's cheaper than visiting the fam in Perth. The best deal I could get
with Qantas was $1380 for the same date. Is anybody else planning travel
with V? I do Sydney to LA fairly regularly, and picking between available
airlines up until now is a case of choosing the crappier of a crappy
bunch. And yes, it is a full service airline with inflight entertainment
in every seat.

Ha :) You'll have to excuse my enthusiasm. But really, $580? That's almost
like a weekend-away type airfare. I would love to be a virgin employee,
GB. Do you think they'll employ a 50-something PPL into the flight deck of
a 777?
The purpose of my trip is to go "airplane" hunting. I know it's aeroplane
or aircraft or whatever on the underside of the hula-hoop but everybody
I've contacted over the last few weeks insists otherwise.

Doesn't matter.
Even at their regular price, it's still cheaper than Qantas. and the
aircraft is less likely to explode or run out of battery juice ;-)
maybe qantas can use some of that hard to come by profit of nearly 1 Billion
dollars to invest in some secure aircraft ;-) Or maybe they can stop
colludin with other airlines to fix prices.

Anything that gives QF competition on flights to America has to be a good
thing.
Me, I just wish governments would stop protecting dinosaur airlines,
implement full deregulation (i.e. any airline can fly from any airport to
any other airport, domestic or international as long as they meet safety,
technical etc rules) and let the chips fall where they may. If that means
that some airlines go out of business so what. Any airline (or any company
for that matter) that cant survive in a free market shouldn't exist.

That's allowed - since you are looking for an airplane to bring back to
convert to an aeroplane at home.

I am a free market system supporter too BUT a problem exists when; it is
impossible to compete with someone who is running at a loss (going broke) - I
believe that would be/is the case. I have experienced...
