IIRC, as I civilian ATC (now retired) I was required by MATS/AIP to
use the phrase "Check Wheels" for all military aircraft regardless of
the aircraft type. Even if the military pilot used the phrase "3
greens" on first contact with the TWR I was still required to use the
phrase "Check Wheels". I know it sounds silly but those were the
rules then.
Woe betide any ATC that did not use that phrase and the aircraft did a
"wheels up" landing. I believe it has happened.
I'm not sure what is happening now with regard to this situation. It
did seem ridiculous, but never the less it was a requirement.

Regards to all
