QF 30: "Qantas jet drama 'due to oxygen explosion' "

Flight Deck crew oxygen bottles are attached to the area close to where the
damage to the hull is shown in the media pictures.

It will be of interest to see what the investigators find. Some reports have
susggested that the cabin floor above the area of damage is distorted
upwards, this would be unusual with decompression and skin rupture.

This link was sent to me this morning, interesting reading. I wonder how
accurate this report is when compared to the official investigation.

"Qantas jet drama 'due to oxygen explosion'
A fault in the pilots' emergency supply could have caused the near-disaster"

For 3 days this has been front page news, but was there really any chance of
the a/c breaking up in flight?

The United Airlines incident in 1989 (where a cargo door opened in flight
causing a large portion of the RHF fuselage coming off, as well as seats etc
and causing 1 passenger to be sucked out) is something that you'd call a
major incident, given that one passenger died and others were holding on to
their seats in hope that they wouldn't be sucked out.

After watching all the ACI episodes over the years, this Qantas incident
seems to be a tad over-dramatic.

None, I'd say.

BTW, I find it interesting that the oxygen bottles for the flight crew
are so far away from the cockpit. I wonder whether this reflects a
realisation that they represent some level of threat, and a desire to
keep them away from critical flight control sytems.

Sylvia.

Yeah...they keep the engines a long way away too...for just the same
reason :-)

Weight and balance issues.
Keep all the static ? load around the centre of lift.
Pre flight balancing is easier, (something I was going to write here but
brain was clogged).
