Passengers stranded as new Qantas system causes delays
Wednesday, 30 July 2008

The trial of a new check-in system for baggage at Sydney Airport left
Qantas passengers queuing for two hours, flights delayed and some
missing connections altogether.

Qantas introduced their new system during the morning rush, which led
to extended delays of up to 90 minutes for both international and
domestic flights.

The airline attempted to placate passengers over a loudspeaker, as
they explained that the baggage belt had been overloaded and “the boys
are trying to clear it.”

Flights travelling to Perth and Melbourne at midday were both delayed,
Fairfax reports.

Staff did monitor the lengthy queues at check in, in an attempt to
assist those with early flights to bypass the wait. Nevertheless,
several passengers were left in the queue as their scheduled flight
departed.

Qantas acknowledged the new system, but denied responsibility for the
ensuing chaos at Sydney Airport.

"We are implementing a new ticketing and boarding system over the
weekend, so we have had some minor delays because of that," a Qantas
spokesman explained to Fairfax.

The new system, apparently implemented over the weekend, had not been
trialled by staff. “Some staff have come in, and it’s the first time
they have used it,” the spokesman said.
“But we have got extra staff on.”
