ASA urges Qantas to improve maintenance

Let the media feeding frenzy begin ( sigh)

September 1, 2008 - 7:19PM

The civil aviation watchdog has ordered Qantas to improve aircraft
maintenance and will rigorously inspect some of its fleet amid signs
of "emerging problems".

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASE) on Monday released the
findings of a review sparked by a series of emergencies, including
engine problems and July's mid-air drama that saw an exploding oxygen
tank blow a hole in the fuselage of one Qantas plane.

CASA's deputy chief executive of operations Mick Quinn cleared Qantas
of any systemic failings, but said the airline must work to improve
its maintenance and engineering systems.

"We did not find any evidence that the recent spate of incidents -
which is largely why the review was called - has any systemic
failure," he said.

"We believe these are random events, the sort of events that would
happen on any airline, on any given day, in any part of the world."

Thanks Marty .
One Para that is indicative of a slide in Qantas MAY be this one .

"MICK QUINN
The airline's currently operating below its own bench marks, but
as I say does that mean it's unsafe? No, it doesn't. It just means
there's a trend there that I think needs to be addressed."

I think I know where your coming from in your remark and in part I
am also sad to see such an organisation having its washing aired in
public.
On the other hand pleased that the oversight system for once appears
to be working before any thing more deadly occurs

Health check ups of any kind, especially if timely enough to catch any
deficiencies before they become systemic is only to the companies and
the industries benefit .

As an example I cite how in the RAN certain cultures were allowed to
progress and passed on to succeeding generations of mechanics with
the ultimate result being the dropping of a Sea king because of a
cotter pin .

People usually do not know what they in fact do not know .
