Qantas A330 nearly out of juice approaching PER?

In today's Crikey.com newsletter (Squatter's version).

Report on an A330 not having enough fuel to reach PER.

I wonder what it would take to get the proper category ILS equipment installed
so that such events aren't an issue. Seems that a few flights to MEL in recent
times have had to be diverted because of fog.

"Mayday!" Qantas jet dices with ditching off Perth
Ben Sandilands writes:

As if a fake ground engineer and dodgy electrical repairs weren’t enough to
rattle Qantas regulars, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has dropped an
incident report which reminds the airline of the need to make sure its jets have
enough fuel to reach Perth.

The report says that on 16 September last year the crew of a Qantas A330
approaching Perth from Singapore for a midnight landing made two missed
approaches in fog and then called "Mayday", the international distress signal,
as they made a risky autoland approach.

From the ATSB Report:

The crew calculated that at the completion of the approach
the aircraft would have about 30 minutes margin
over the minimum fuel reserves.

About 60-75mins of fuel remaining!

That may buy you another hour around Perth, but still may not successfully
get you to an alternate.

No it wasn't legal (hence the incident report and the ATSB involvement);

But it became necessary!

Aircraft don't carry alternate fuel in case of an accident.
ATC Managers have the authority to have a disabled aircraft removed from
a runway - including bulldozer.
