Overwritten? How can the Quantas CVR be....?

Today's press is reporting that the CVR is no help in the investigation
because it was overwritten.

Huh? Last time I checked, a CVR held an hour or two of audio. How long
was QF30 in the air after the incident?

[Does anyone have a timeline of the event?]

Not that a CVR would be much help; if anything the FDR will have more
useful data.

I struggled with that as well they say the last hour was overwritten,
when these things should have 24 hrs. strange.

A timeline has been written up in other posts.

Hence the first question is: what vintage CVR?

Not in the US. There is law about that specifically. I think it's
14 C.F.R.

Good point. The flight time from Hong Kong to Manila is approx 1 hr 50
mins.

I would have thought that a diversion to Manila from a point 60
minutes south of Hong Kong en-route to ML would be well inside 2
hours.
