Hi guys..
I hear CASA is looking to introduce a Multicrew Pilots License (MPL).
Has anyone got further information on this??
From what I have read the license can be obtained in 240hrs but there
is no mention of prior experience..
Any comments, information would be appreciated!
And yes I know there is info posted on the CASA website...

Hi Jad. I've got no information, but I've got a *very general comment* to
make. As a commercial pilot you might be able to relate :)
Before I ramble on, I haven't kept up-to-date on what's happening with the
MPL and I'm not even familiar with the proposed syllabus. As somebody that
has grown up within the corruptible ranks of general aviation I've got
conflicting views on the MPL but, for the purpose of my ramble this morning,
I'll play the Devil's Advocate and comment on some of the less favourable
qualities of GA.
I was fortunate enough to get a fairly comprehensive blurb on the Multi Crew
Licence (MPL) by a CASA friend of mine a couple of years ago before the
nature of the licence was widely known or publicised to the industry. At the
time I remember I was completely opposed to it but have since come very
close to changing my mind - and this has a lot to do with what GA does to a
pilot, rather than the benefits offered by the radically different multi
crew licence.

Hi Marty,
Thanks very much for you reply! Its good to hear the thoughts of
others.. I too have always dreamed to fly, from the age of six I wanted
to be the one in charge of a Boeing..
As I got older, I pursue my dream and obtained a PP licence one day
hoping to move onto bigger and better things. I then switched to helix's
thinking there is more work in the rotary field within Australia.
After spending countless hours of study, thousands and thousands of
dollars on training I am still searching for that break into the
helicopter world.. and when I get there I get welcomed with shitty
working conditions, minimal pay and basically no life!
When I heard of the ML, as most pilots who have the airline dream,
thought it a way to bypass those years of chasing work, working for
nothing etc... I am not getting any younger and, see this as my chance
to make my real dream come true.
It will be interesting to see how it unfolds with the license. Even more
interesting will be how much training will cost. I am expecting it too
be in the 200k+ mark!
Once again, thanks very much for your input..

Wow... just, wow. That was about the most cynical view of GA I have ever
read in my life. And so far from my own experiences it might as well
have happened on another planet.
If that's what GA in Australia is really like, I might as well get out
and maybe fly on some holidays back in the US, on and off. With
instructors and friends who firmly straddle both worlds and happily so.
Never have I encountered this bitter enmity and dividing line between GA
and "big jet people" as here. WTF happened to create this?
Half the big-iron jocks I know in the US have a Cessna or other small
plane on the side - one even commutes to work at DIA from his country
ranch. They all came up through GA, building hours, instructing, the
works. Only two that I know were military pilots. I've never gotten a
feeling of contempt and have never felt or met anybody who felt enmity
and envy towards those who fly commercial big stuff. If anything the
envy has turned around, with the job insecurity, post-911 paranoia and
other crap that is plagueing those who fly for the majors.

marty's beautiful description of the industry snipped
marty GA isnt an industry. it is just a whole lot of people doing the
same thing side by side but in an uncoordinated way. it only looks
like an industry. it is full of individuals.
