Flying in a Circle?

This is why I probably would never hack it as a pilot - basic nav skills.

When my wife was flying home SIN-MEL with Singapore Airlines she was watching
their progress on the screen. She said that the flight path took them down Oz
and across the Bight (South Oz).

I wonder why they would fly this route? Wouldn't it be quicker to fly direct,
across northern Oz down towards NSW and into Victoria?

And on approach to MEL they were delayed for a few minutes and apparently
circled Bendigo (north of MEL).

If they came in from the west why would they then be so far north of Melbourne
Airport?

As I said, I'd never make it as a navigator as they'd obviously have good
reasons for doing what they did.

Dunno - adverse winds on the direct path? The only time I've done
MEL-SIN, we went just about over Alice Springs. I've done SIN-ADL and
from memory, that was just about a straight line to ADL so via the Bight
seems a bit unusual.

Delayed? Or ahead of schedule due tail winds?

My flight Nth West-East across Oz late on Sunday had 120mph+ on the tail.
