Anybody get a good look at them?

I saw two ( I think) jets fly over the CBD headed west. They would have gone

From Defence:

Three Royal Australian Air Force Hawk aircraft will conduct a fly-past over
St Andrew's Cathedral at 12.25pm. The Hawks will pass east to west over the
Cathedral before flying back to RAAF Williamtown along the coast.

I hope that flew so that they could land clear of the built up area in
the event of an engine failure.

Probably not. Of course, they're not bound by civilian air rules.

Do we need to take these kinds of risks just for the sake of fly pasts?

Sylvia.
