Welll you have to consider training and such too.
The Germans were considered the best trained Mig-29 pilots for
instance, because they had the training time and the western model as
well as the Mig fighter.
That said, what do you think the Russians will sell, and will it be in
their interest if they have other clients in the region? Will it have
an effect on their relations with them? One has to consider those
things. If Russia thinks selling their best jets would honk off China,
for instance, it hurts the chances there that they'll give you top of
the line stuff.
Weren't the Aussies considering Eurofighters? Also, if you have F/A-18
already, that's a decent plane.
