Could they get one in and out of East Sale? For our fires, it'd be as
local as you can get. Ditto if they used converted Hercs or other large
fixed wing aircraft.
Whatever, they're gonna have to do more than what they're doing now, if
they want to stop a number of towns and regional cities being razed.

If we still had the MAFFS equipment (which can drop fire retardant as
well as water) the Hercs could operate out of almost anywhere.
Sale is close to Maffra and Seaton. Gaffney's Creek is closer to Benalla
or Mangalore.

Can anyone out there confirm whether or not the evergreen supertanker is
coming to Australia considering the magnitude of the fires we are currently
having? (And more to the point will soon be having) Some say it's a bad
idea, as there are limited areas it can fly.ie: limited landing sites.
Others say it's great, even with the landing issue, as they have a greater
commute speed. For instance, with any large fires around melbourne outer,
landing can be done at Avalon, and fire pumpers can be used to refill. I
know an old pumper I was on could put out 2,500litres per minute. Use two
pumpers and you have 5,000litres per minute.
Supertanker holds 75,000litres, and is mutidrop capable.
Giving a fill time of 15minutes.
Taxi time 5 minutes each way. (10 minute total)
Dash time 10 minutes to fire at up to 250knots.
10 minute loiter for preparation.
10 minutes bombing and return.
Total time between bombing sorties approximately 35-40 minutes for
75,000litres.
Requires 2 pilots, probably 3 onboard support crew, and ground crew minimum
of 4 on two refilling pumpers.
Very labour intensive. ...

Sorry forgot to mention, but the 747 may not actually have and STC yet (but
may have happened since October). I wonder if CASA would permit it's
certification as 'Experimental' considering the amount of testing already
done.

On a related note, whatever happened to the MAFFS units bought in the
1980s to turn Hercs into fire bombers?
Cheers

what has happened with the Neptune that is/was (I don't know if it is still
there) at Perth airport that was converted as afire bomber. All I know is
the fire dept didn't want it dispite it being avalable and tested.
