I know you have to have a Class 1 medical to use the privledges of a
commercial pilot, but do you have to have one to earn the license?

As far as I know, to do the flight test you need a Class 1 - so by
extension, the answer to your question is yes. If in doubt, call CASA
and have your credit card ready. Otherwise, call a reputable flying
school (ie, NOT Basair).

hard to understand the logic of why you would need a Class 1 to sit
the test, but then I've learnt not to be too logical when it comes to
CASA. I cant seem to find it in the regs anywhere, but I will contact
CASA. Dont really want to cough up the dollars for the medical if I
am not actually doing any commercial work.

Well its not a problem in the sense that I could find the money, I am
not crying poor, I just dont like wasting my money.. or giving it to
the government to waste.

OK , sorry if I confused you. I would use the term "sit" for a
written exam or a flight test.
Its pretty hard to stand up in a Cessna ! :<)

my approach seems much more sensible.
do the theory through tafe.
pass the tafe exams then go flying.
no dollars to casa and verified commercial level knowledge.
