Bugger, I thought this was all about a new Dick Smith sale catalogue.

Greetings all

I've been lurking around this newsgroup for a few weeks now. One of my
son's is doing a Civil Aviation degree and I thought I'd hang out some jet
jockeys to work out what the f*** he's talking about and to sound
knowledgeable sometimes! Mind you, it doesn't seem like aviation is a
common topic here :-)

I'm curious to know what people in the industry think of Dick Smith's
meanderings on his website http://www.dicksmithflyer.com.au/ . Certainly a
man with a mission but is he a saviour or a heretic? What do y'all think?

Cheers

Rob

Hi AA,

Why troll alert?

2nd question: Is this Dick Smith as in the cheesy Aussie electronics
chain? The wannabe Radio Shack that doesn't quite get it (as opposed to
Jaycar)?

3rd question: from my still very US-centric aviation view, this guy does
seem to have some points. Going through my transition training I've
muttered about some of those issues he mentions more than once
(culminating in: "FFS, just take over the US FAR/AIM, make Outback
Australia = Alaska for exceptions and be done with it - what you've got
is a mess!").

Meh, follow-up... I now read some of his articles.

He sort of has a point, but geez, this is so much baby and the bathwater
stuff...

His prediction about a major CFIT crash... the fact that it's never
happened in the Aus system *does* sort of indicate that despite feeling
outdated (to me), ASA seems to work fairly well.

Ah well...

Jesus - I had to google "troll" to see what one was! I'm not interested in
creating an argument, I'm genuinely curious to know what people in the
industry think of Dick Smith's concerns about air safety in Australia. I do
quite a bit of air travel (both domestic and international) and found his
website quite disturbing.

I've since isssued a cancel request on this message, my comments weren't
totally charitable.

Dick and I will go back to ignoring each other.

It was the 'done' thing at the time.....

Out west, a truckie got done for 'just under 100' on radar, after slowing down for a 60 KPH
country town. He tried to explain the the cop that he was NOT speeding - he just forgot to turn
off his anti-radar radar that transmitted a return signal to the police unit of 98 KPH when it
detected he was under surveillance.

That story come to me direct from a DRI (Federal gov regional radio inspector) who was keen to
get his hands on one to inspect as up 'till that time they had only heard of them.
