CASA - The Campaign Against Sensible Administration

I was wondering if any of out there have any opinions on the future
direction of CASA.

Q. Is it getting better or worse?

I lived in the U.S for 6 years and I love the FAA. Probably one of the
few government bodies in the world that actually works well. They are
truly an excellent, encouraging, enthusiastic and efficient department
to work with [all the e's ;)].

I had the fortunate experience of doing most of my flying out of Boeing
field in Seattle and I met some fabulous FAA officers. They were always
willing to help or lend a hand in some way. It seems to be the opposite
here, the CASA guys want to find any excuse to shut everyone down in
GA. I am reminded of traffic wardens for some reason.

We are the same size of the U.S (almost) here. Aviation needs to be
encouraged in the same way it was in the U.S. for exactly the same
reasons. With encouragement of aviation comes process innovation and
all the costs of admin will come down and all will reap the benefits.

I can identify with that as I had (along with Australian licences) a Canadian CPL and an FAA
ATR. The US FAA had indeed a 'can do' mentality

At that time the Australian DCA would take up to three months to mark and send results of ALTP
written exams where the FAA took just three days.

Having moved here from the US, I never thought I'd be adding my support
for the FAA.

Back in the Stated we always joked about the 2 Greatest Lies in Aviation:

1. I'm from the FAA and I'm here to help you.
2. Boy, am I glad to see you!

That was before I started working on converting my license.

I just flunked my PAOS. The first multiple choice exam I failed in
20-odd years (yes,I counted). Rarely have I felt so utterly lost,
confused and angered.

Since 1998 they've had the CASR to replace the CARs and the disgraceful
mess of amendments that is the CAOs - and they can't get it done.

Sadly CASA seems to be averse to accepting any FAA lead. After all, they
exist in a country that wasted good British tea and cannot offer
knighthoods.

I believe, as an example, the new maintenance regs will be based on EASA
standards - and of course "EASA is largely staffed with ex JAA and EU NAA
personnel".

What is there to learn from a country with the highest density of pilots
and air traffic after all? >.<

Love your handle, BTW. If I ever pass that bloody PAOS, I'll be doing my
transition training for my CIFR and my CPL in a Cirrus. Was delighted to
see how many have made their way "out here".

1. Make sure you know the G430 inside out first - that will save time and
money.
2. For IFR make sure you know the "bypass" (Cct breaker pull) procedures
for a PFD failure (and what works off power...

I've been "flying" the sim that you can download from Garmin's website.
I think I'm getting pretty good at that thing. Just need an actual a/c
around it now. ;)

Wow, thanks! I'm going to print these out and put them in my POH.

I'm also just renting one that belongs to the FI. Not rich enough.

Also, this one is a pre-1337 model, the last one before the PFD. Should
be pretty familiar to fly on instruments with the usual 6-eyed scan. ;)

Maps? How quaint! j/k. I'm one who still cross-checks GPS with VORs.
Hopelessly old-school I guess!

Steve, how true you are. Until Civilian Aircraft Safety Authority becomes
the Civilian Aircraft Safety Administration, nothing will change,
Unfortunately there are a few in CASA that are trying to do right, but the
bosses( want of a better word) keep over riding them.

Steve I too got my PPL in the states, and was amazed when I got back here
that we were still in the "Dark Ages" the NAS is just a example of this,
imagine wanting to bastardise the Airspace rules that work so well in the US
for here. I mean I have Flown into Class C airfields, and Class B
airspace( for a touch and go at Dulles in Va) with naught of a problem, hey
C-172, can you keep up to 120 Knots Please, Oh you want a Pop up into my
airspace, Please do, just give me a minute to make sure everything is all
right.

In Australia it goes like this, You want what????
So what can we do about CASA, some would say nothing, I say make them
change. act on things, jsut don't sit there and take it, Join AOPA(Aust)
and make them act for us.
Get out there and Aviate.

Regards

Jon

Glad someone else mentions a story like this.

I get these "coming the raw prawn?" looks from the flight instructors
when I tell them how I once requested and received clearance for a
practise ILS with tough and go at Denver Intl airport in the middle of
evening rush hour (6pm) in a Turbo Arrow.

ATC had no problem vectoring me in between 767s and 757s as long as I
kept the throttle to the firewall down to DH.
