Austers at Wentworth

Well, this year 19 Austers turned up for the annual Auster rally at
Wentworth, NSW. The weather made things difficult for the easterners,
who had to battle 25 knot headwinds (sometimes more) on the Friday,
but those of us coming from SA had a dream run. On the Saturday
morning, with Dorothy at 3,500' I never saw less than 100 knots ground
speed for the entire trip. Mind you, at that altitude the temp outside
was so close to freezing, even the engine was wishing it had worn a
pair of gloves.
A few miles out of Wentworth, I thought I heard Dorothy's even beat
stumble a couple of times, so after throttling back for the descent, I
checked the sparks and she ran like a chaffcutter when the right side
was turned off. (Yeah, I know, RT, as far as you are concerned, ALL
Gypsies run like chaffcutters...

Great yarn Coop, it's a pity the Auster in the MAAF at Oakey can't get
around like that, next time I'm in Kanmantoo picking up some bacon from my
mate there I might try and drop in to say G'day.

How many Austers are still airworthy in Australia?

Is VH-BNA one of them?

A search for "auster" as the manufacturer on the CASA register at
http://www.casa.gov.au/casadata/regsearch/findairs.asp returned 133
registrations including BNA.

Of course there's no mention of airworthiness though.

Go here to look at pictures of most of Australia's Austers:

However, BNA isn't there (yet) because it is undergoing a rebuild at
Gawler, SA. Almost finished, just a few details and some paperwork to
be completed. The latter may take the longest...

Be lucky to catch me there- or anyone else. We usually just push our
machines out and depart, very little circuit bashing or hanging around
drinking and telling lies takes place. You are more likely to
encounter me at Noarlunga or Aldinga.
Cheers,

Sounds fair :-) 'Course that's the downside of an inverted donc. Sure
you get a nice high prop line, but you've got spark plugs instead of drain
plugs at the lowest, oiliest, point.

What are those things like to t/o and land? Are they really as prone to
ground loops as they look likely to be? There was one in a maintenance
hangar in Rocky back in the 70s, waiting for major maintenance on hoses etc,
so I've crawled over one but never seen one actually moving. Nicely made
and very strong IIRC. Not quite in the same league as a Blanik, though.
