another evidently :-)

evidently, and you will remember it being discussed on this newsgroup,
the problem of alternates into a socked in Perth has actually
occurred.

the large jet was making its way to perth only to arrive with perth
airport socked in. captain (the pilot) worked out the fuel remaining
as enough for 4 missed approaches. 2 were attempted to minimums and
had to wave off when nothing was visible. another was attempted and
had to wave off with absolutely solid clag at the decision height.
captain was told to seek the alternative airport (learmonth)

captain then declared pan pan pan and a fuel emergency.
last landing was made with the autoland engaged and the approach flown
on the computer hands off.
said computer greased the landing on in totally opaque skies (fog).

my congratulations go to the initiative of the crew.

isnt it high time that Perth Airport put in a full instrument landing
system?

Shouldn't they all?

How many times do you hear of diverted flights into MEL, for example?

I remember on a flight into JFK it must've been all on auto as the fog, cloud or
whatever was present all the way in. When the aircraft touched down the whole
cabin cheered, clapped, etc. I shrugged and asked my wife who at the time flew
this route fairly often, was this normal?

Whatever, the approach and landing all was fairly smooth other than buffetting
that you experience in these sorts of conditions.

Knock it off, Stealth. Would you prefer the alternative - motor around
aimlessly until everything went quiet before it went very noisy and killed
everyone?
