Not sure. I guess you would also have to fit GNSS system to provide position
info.

Can anyone provide some insight?

No. The system currently favoured is Mode S ES (extended squitter) and
equipment is being produced that is capable of this mode, but it is
VERY new. Garmin have recently announced that the software upgrade is
available for their GTX330, 330D and 33 transponders. Honeywell has it
as an option on their KT74 transponder.

The system that is different is the Capstone project, operating at
978MHz. There will be new ADSB equipment on the market soon that is
based on these types of datalinks.

The Australian Standard is one of the reasons why the first attempt
fell over. The new ES system is also being adopted in Europe and USA.

Per the earlier links, the Garmin GTX328 is NOT compatible nor is the
327.

first words in the blurb "designed exclusively for europe"
no

possibly

2198 euro.

2460 euro

again 2,460 euro

$us 5,350

so let me get this straight. you want/expect me to fit to my aircraft
an electronic device costing over $aus3,000 which provides not a
single benefit to me in the aircraft I'm flying?

And you aren't paying for it.
And it is that last mile that is of concern.
And the IFR deadline is 2010 and VFR a couple of years later.
You carry a transponder don't you? Why? it is of no benefit.

You won't be paying for it, you will get a $10,000-00 voucher from AsA
for it - increases the value of your acft without you paying a cent.
Even a tightwad like you should be able to see the benefit in that.
