"AN Indonesian pilot at the helm of an ill-fated Garuda flight has pleaded for a
Yogyakarta court's leniency, saying he has already suffered enough.
Wearing his captain's uniform, Marwoto Komar formally addressed Slemen District
Court in Yogyakarta where he is fighting charges he deliberately crashed a
Garuda jet in 2007, killing 21 including five Australians.
The charges carry penalties up to a maximum of life imprisonment.
"I need to convey that on Wednesday March 7, 2007, early before dawn, I left
home full of responsibility for the job that I cherish, as a pilot,'' he said.
"There was not even the tiniest intention in me at that time to deliberately
execute my job carelessly and irresponsibly.
"I would be happy if I could help all passengers reach their destinations
safely. This is what I've been doing successfully in my 22-year career as a pilot.
"Despite my intentions, there was the accident which caused victims.''
Prosecutors allege Marwoto ignored 15 alarms to abort the landing of the Boeing
737 at Yogyakarta's Adi Sucipto Airport."

There is something strange about this bloke but just can't yet put my
finger on it. Even allowing for the Cultural propensity to Flaunt
Status and position.
Fact one
his License has been revoked
2 He has been sacked from Garuda
3 yet he continues to wear 4 bars and wear company uniform including
head dress with the Garuda bird rampant ?
His manner of delivering evidence and idiom indicates (to me) that
he still has not yet grasped the gravity of the situation .

They may well not do so. They've lost loved ones and want someone to
blame. What of it?

to me it is clear that you think he deserves to get away with it.
"but punishing him serves no useful purpose."
maybe his purpose in life is to be an example to others??

To give other pilots an incentive not to become delusional in the cockpit?

What of it? He was directly responsible by his reckless action for killing
people.
Of course he is to blame. As others have pointed out - so are those who
placed him in this position.
If I drive recklessly and kill someone I don't expect to escape punishment.
Now that would be criminally unjust, particularly to the victim and his/her
relatives.
