The NIMBY Syndrome Continues - Essendon Airport

Author: Snapper
Date: Aug 31, 2008 19:25

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24272250-2862,00.html

I wonder how many of these people have been here since before the airport
commenced operations? And how many moved there knowing that an airport is
nearby. In particular how many people moved there since 1978 when that fatal
crash occured?

And how many of these "protestors" have a vested interest in seeing the airport
closed and the land opened up to redevelopment?

If they close the airport will they accept a doubling of capital improved value
based rates?

Say they move the airport, or rather build a new one out near Calder or
somewhere like that, how long before the ever expanding suburbia encroaches on
it and it (and perhaps Calder Raceway) are forced to close?

Look at the likes of JFK, LAX and LGA, three airports smack in the middle of
suburbia that see more operations in a month than what MEL or Essendon would see
in a year. Yet they don't seem to be under threat of closure for "safety
reasons".

What do the pilots here who may use Essendon or even Moorabin, think of this?

At least the 'Courier Mail' headlines didn't report - Doomed Qantas plane's..........

Author: veritas
Date: Aug 31, 2008 18:34

....engines failed and it plummeted towards Frankfurt, craching on the runway
. The striken plane was on it's way to London as it was terrorising all on
board. Ms Prim, a passenger, said that she had "shit herself when there was
this all-mighty vibration". She went on the say that some of the passengers
were running up and down the aisles in panic and had to be sedated.

Another plane was reported "broken" at Brisbane.

However, what it did report was:-

*Sorry, this Qantas jet is broken*

Well done CM - you probably got it somewhere near right - at last.

Pretty impressive if it's not faked.

(you can never tell, these days - I thought a B737 water ditching was real til
it was pointed out on here that it wasn't ...)

We have lost another legend of Australian aviation and his passenger.
Didn't pull out of a dive during acrobatics in a Yak over Stradbroke Island.

When driving home today from the Sunshine Coast (just of north of Brisbane
Australia) I had the pleasure of following the interesting old plane for
quite some time.

Right at the very bottom of the page - left hand side.

Some more info here.....

Does anyone have any more links???

Mid-Air Collision - near miss or a near hit?

Luckily Qantas wasn't involved. The Editorial staff at the Herald-Sun would've
been in multi-orgasmic mode over this, along with Andrew Bolt blaming it on the
global warming conspiricy...

  Running IO 360 Oversquare

Author: BernieFlyer
Date: Aug 29, 2008 16:49

Hi Team

I have an IO 360 engine with a 3 bladed constant speed prop. I was
taught to never operate with engine power (manifold pressure) greater
than rpm eg 23 inches of MP and 2,300 rpm. I have read though that this
is something of an old wives tale and that indeed there can be
advantages in reducing rpm and running the engine with say 24 inches and
2,200 rpm. This reduces cylinder wear and piston speeds but does it
stress the engine to a higher level? There is a lot about "big bore" IO
540s and how they are getting better life running oversquare. The IO 360
is a 4 vs a six but the cylinders in both have the same capacity.

I am interested in the views of those more of an engineering bent or
anyone who has a well informed view on the matter.

I find it somewhat curious that with this level of detail, that neither of the
words "inspected" or "tested", appear anywhere in the report.
