Polish president: Ratifying EU treaty 'pointless'

Ratifying the European Union's reform treaty after Irish voters rejected it
last month would be "pointless," Poland's president was quoted as saying
Tuesday.

President Lech Kaczynski said that "for the time being, the question of the
treaty is pointless," according to an interview published Tuesday in the
Dziennik daily.

The Polish president's comments were reported on the day France takes over
the EU's six-month rotating presidency. Ireland, the only country to put the
treaty to a public vote, rejected the treaty in a referendum on June 12.

Poland's parliament overwhelmingly approved a bill allowing the president to
ratify the treaty in April, but it still needs the president's signature to
take effect.

Asked whether he will sign the Lisbon Treaty, Kaczynski was quoted as
saying: "Right now it's pointless."

The president's stance puts him at odds with the country's prime minister,
Donald Tusk.

lichen "EU-Schwenk" der SPÖ als künstlich und verlogen entlarvt.

Derzeit regieren in 22 der 27 Mitgliedstaaten rechtskonservative
aka "neoliberale" Premiers. Im EU-Parlament verfügen Rechts-
konservative /Neoliberale de facto über eine absolute Mehrheit.

Die Kommissare werden von den Premiers der Mitgliedstaaten
ausgewählt, also auch reaktionär - rechtskonservativ /neoliberal.

Es ist also kein Wunder, wenn auf gesamter EU-Ebene die neo-
liberaler Meinung herrscht, der Markt werde die Ölspekulation
und Lebensmittelkrise von selbst in den "Griff" [1] bekommen.

'Plotters' seized as tension mounts in Turkey

Political tensions rose Tuesday across Turkey as police seized two retired
generals, a prominent journalist and others accused of plotting to overthrow
the government and prosecutors undertook a court case to ban the
Islamic-rooted ruling party.
The developments dramatize the sharp and serious political tensions between
the country's Islamic-rooted ruling party -- the Justice and Development
Party, or AKP -- and its outspoken critics from the nation's secularist
establishment.

Since autumn, police have been arresting and jailing people accused of being
part of Ergenekon, an alleged plot to overthrow the government. During the
effort, there has been harassment of journalists, and news reports have said
many people are being held without charge.

On Tuesday, police made 22 arrests in Ankara, Istanbul, Antalya and Trabzon,
according to Turkey's semi-official Anadolu Agency, which said its
information came from prosecutors. Three other people were being sought, the
agency said.
