More Info United Nations Core Values: Integrity, Professionalism, Respect for Diversity Responsibilities This post is located in the Russian Translation Service, Documentation Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. Within delegated authority, and under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Russian Translation Service, the Senior Reviser will be responsible for the following duties: Revises translations and original summary records dealing with subjects of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature. Translates texts of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature. Directs the conduct of terminological research within the Russian Translation Service. Counsels and assists revisers and translators/precis-writers, as required, in addition to performing all or some of their functions. Assists the Chief of Service in the preparation of terminology materials to meet the urgent needs of the service. Assists the Chief of Service in the preparation of instructions. Assists the Chief of Service in monitoring the quality of in-house and contractual translations and training of staff. Assist the Chief of Service in programming daily and long-term work of the Service, when required. Assists the Chief of Service in selecting texts for United Nations competitive examinations, in marking candidates scripts and in evaluating results. Serves as officer-in-charge in the absence of the Chief of Service/Section. Performs other related duties as required. Competencies Professionalism - Excellent writing, analytical and translation skills; proven ability to produce, within established deadlines, revision/translation that meets the highest standards of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original text; mastery of terminological and reference techniques and a proven ability to research and use all sources of reference and information and to do research; highest level of initiative, political sensitivity, versatility, judgement and discretion, familiarity with the range of issues relating to management of the Service. Knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations (political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical) with a recognized specialization in a particular area. Communication - Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Teamwork - Ability to gain the support and co-operation of others in a team endeavour through the demonstration of recognized technical competence and leadership qualities; sensitivity and respect for diversity. Technological Awareness - Commitment to actively following developments in technology that have potential implication to translation, and willingness to learn to use appropriate new technologies. QUALIFICATIONS Education A first level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Must have passed the United Nations competitive examination for the recruitment of Russian language translators. Work Experience A minimum of ten years of translation and précis-writing and revising experience are required, of which eight preferably should have been within the United Nations. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised perfect command of Russian, which must be the candidates main language, and excellent knowledge of English, as well as French or Spanish, as tested by the appropriate United Nations competitive examination, are required. Knowledge of other official languages is desirable. Other Skills Proficiency in utilization of IT applications needed for translation work, such as DtSearch, ODS and word-processing programs, is required..
