Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, a division of McGraw-Hill Education, has an immediate opening for a Senior Designer at our New York, NY location to work on a contract basis. Responsibilities: * Produce quality, creative and competitive page layouts, design elements and cover designs. * Review manuscript with editorial and provide effective solutions. Extrapolate design solutions to other program components, such as ancillaries, posters, covers, etc. * Work with art buyer and photo researcher to effectively communicate ideas through various visual formats and research and establish appropriate art usage. * Senior designer is the lead designer on prototype development for several grades. During prototype stages assist Design manager in managing in house design group or be contact point for out of house studios. * Communicate efficiently with production to create and maintain workflow and schedules. * Maintain clean files and work with EDP to ensure their quality. Work with other designers to ensure correct file management. * Work with external design studios as required by project placement. Review their layouts and suggest re-works as necessary to maintain standards of quality and to ensure quality work is delivered within deadlines. * Keep superiors constantly aware of changes either in content or design that affect scope, schedule or look of project. Communicate same to other designers on project. * Review and correct page proofs at every stage of design and production. Attend press checks as necessary. * Assist in reviewing and maintaining budgets on projects. Keep track of art purchasing budget for assigned projects. Required: * Bachelor’s degree required in related field * Knowledge of schoolbook market (minimum 4 years) and sense for designing for publishing. * Good communication and problem solving skills, as well as the ability to work effectively under pressure is essential. * Must show good project and people management as position require some team leadership skills. * Proficiency in publishing computer programs: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop
