Description: Senior Accountant

My client, a non-for-profit organization, makes grants in five core program areas: higher education; museums and art conservation; performing arts; libraries and scholarly communication; and conservation and the environment. The Foundation is seeking a Senior Accountant. This position is responsible for performing a variety of activities associated with the accounting and reporting of the Foundation’s grant making, payroll, and financial reporting functions. This position reports to the Accounting Manager of the Foundation. Responsibilities: Grant Responsibilities • Responsible for all aspects of grant accounting, including the integration of journal entries into the general ledger system, grant expense coding, maintenance of supporting schedules and the preparation of the grants footnote at year-end • Process all grant checks, which includes organizing, mailing, and internally distributing award letters • Responsible for coordinating mailing of grant award letters and checks with General Counsel’s office • Maintain a database in Microsoft Access representing a grants sub-ledger, reconcile this database to the general ledger system on a monthly basis and match grant descriptions with the Foundation’s Annual Report • Reconcile grants payable to the File Room records on a monthly basis • Responsible for the accounting, depositing, and internal reporting of grant refunds Payroll Responsibilities • Responsible for all aspects of payroll accounting, including the preparation and integration of all payroll-related journal entries, as well as the monitoring of payroll and payroll tax expense coding • Monitor and track payroll expense allocations on a quarterly basis • Coordinate payroll changes with the Human Resources Department and electronically process these changes using the ADP software • Prepare payroll reports for Human Resources Manager on an as needed basis • Maintain payroll registers, as well as other various payroll files • Reconcile gross payroll on a semi-monthly basis and prepare a semi-monthly payroll analysis for the Controller of the Foundation • Transfer cash to the payroll and FSA accounts on a semi-monthly basis and records these transfers in the general ledger system • Perform annual payroll synchronizations with ADP • Reconcile and review all quarterly and annual tax filings and review the year-end W-2’s Financial Reporting Responsibilities • Analyze operating expenses on a monthly/quarterly basis • Assist in the preparation of the balance sheet and income statement on a quarterly basis • Assist the Accounting Manager in the preparation of quarterly statements of functional and departmental expenses • Create reports in Great Plains as needed Other General Responsibilities • Prepare various schedules in preparation of the year-end audit • Interact with the Foundation’s Internal Auditor on an as needed basis • Special projects as needed by the Accounting Manager and Controller Required Skills and Experience: The successful candidates will have the following qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in accounting • Minimum 3 years of experience in public accounting • CPA or progress toward CPA license is required • Proficient in Microsoft Excel • Knowledge of Great Plains, Microsoft Access, and/or ADP software preferred • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously • Organized and detail-oriented • Strong communication, mathematical, and analytical skills • Maturity and integrity required to work with sensitive/confidential information Additional Information Location: NEW YORK, NY
