More Info United Nations Core Values: Integrity, Professionalism, Respect for Diversity Responsibilities This post is located in the Russian Translation Service, Documentation Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. Under the general supervision of the Chief, Russian Translation Service, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: translate, mostly without revision, into Russian and/or revise, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency; must aim at a high standard of accuracy, faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original text, giving due consideration to output volume and deadlines; do précis-writing, when required; assist senior revisers in the development of Russian translation service terminology bases; counsel and assist translators on terminology and translation issues; supervise small groups of translators and ensure consistency among individual translators working on the same document, as required; participate in marking language examination papers. Competencies Professionalism - The incumbent must have well developed analytical, writing and translation skills; proven ability to produce within established deadlines translations that meet the standards of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original text; a good grasp of terminological and reference research techniques and a proven ability to research and use all sources of reference and terminology; a high degree of initiative, political sensitivity, versatility, judgement and discretion; tact and negotiating skills. Must be able to work well under pressure and to be persistent in the face of difficulties or challenges. Commitment to the goal of achieving gender balance in staffing.

Accountability - Ability to deliver outputs for which one has responsibility within prescribed time, cost and quality standards.

Planning and Organizing - Ability to identify priorities and to plan, co-ordinate and monitor work of others.

QUALIFICATIONS Education A degree from a university or an institution of equivalent status is required; must have passed the United Nations competitive examination for the recruitment of Russian translators. Work Experience At least five years of translation and/or precis-writing experience are required, of which three preferably within the United Nations. Knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations (political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical) with a recognized specialization in a particular substantive, technical or administrative area. Languages A thorough command of Russian, which must be the candidates main language, and an excellent knowledge of English and either French or Spanish, as tested by appropriate United Nations competitive examination. Knowledge of additional official languages is desirable. Other Skills Facility in using the United Nations terminology databases and word processing programmes and familiarity with computer software used in the United Nations are highly desirable.
