Description: Job Title Production Designer - New York Kaplan Division Kaplan Test Prep City New York State/Province New York FT/PT Full Time Job Level Some Experience Required Working Hours Days Job Description Kaplan has an opening for a Production Designer The Production Designer will be a member of a team that develops and manages new content creation. The Production Designer is responsible for the layout of print content that pertains to various Kaplan products, and which may include books, teacher guides, covers, packaging etc., using primarily Adobe CS3 Creative Suite. As a member of our team, you will closely interact with our in-house Editors to collaboratively produce quality products. In this position, you will be responsible for: creating layouts, formatting text from our writers / editors, composing pages, and building templates / style sheets for the preparation of print publication materials. You may also design various marketing materials as needed. The ideal candidate is a detail oriented self-starter who thrives in a fast paced, collaborative work environment, and who can work well under deadline pressure. This is a great opportunity to further develop your skills and production expertise while being a member of a dynamic, growing team. Responsibilities:

* Format and edit content into final, ready-to-print form using InDesign. Create templates and layout pages. * Create and edit figures in Illustrator. * Scan and edit art in Photoshop. * Gather and maintain font databases. * Create and maintain a store of frequently used artwork. * File management for in-process and produced content. * Run pre-press / pre-flight publication check. * Work with editors, managing editor, and manufacturing staff to maintain a work schedule for product creation and meet all deadlines and quality standards throughout the course of each project. Requirements:

* 2+ years of publishing, graphic design, and print production experience. * Book layout and publishing / production experience preferred. Publishing company experience is a plus. * Familiarity with educational publishing styles, designs, and layouts. * Experience in page layout and producing print-ready files. * Prior experience / ability to build book templates, master pages and style sheets. * Strong graphic design skills and typographic knowledge with an eye for layout and design. * A great print portfolio with examples of book work, a strong typographic sensibility plus creative, functional, and pleasing designs. * Expert knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, and Quark XPress in a Mac environment. Full proficiency with Mac OS through version 10.4. * Familiarity with Microsoft Windows and Office. * Must be able to work efficiently, yet maintain high standards of quality and accuracy. Proven track record of accurate, error-free work. Organized with a deadline-driven work ethic and strong attention to detail. * Demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing projects / tasks and demands. * Excellent communication and organizational skills, a positive attitude, and a team player.
