Description: Music Fellows

Category: Teach at KIPP NYC/All Openings Teaching Level: Middle School City - State - Country: US-NY-

More information about this job: Overview: About KIPP NYC KIPP NYC is the family of all KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) programming in New York City and includes four KIPP public middle schools (KIPP Academy, KIPP STAR, KIPP AMP, and KIPP Infinity) designed to teach students to develop the academic and character skills necessary for success in high school and college, to be self-sufficient in the competitive world beyond, and to build a better tomorrow for themselves and us all (www.kippnyc.org). In addition, KIPP NYC runs a comprehensive advocacy program for alumni, KIPP to College, and is developing plans to open a high school and four elementary schools in New York City beginning in 2009. KIPP NYC currently serves over 1,400 KIPP students and alumni, employs over 130 remarkably talented and fun people :), and has a combined operating budget of nearly $16 million. About KIPP NYC's Music Program Since the founding of KIPP Academy in 1995, the KIPP String and Rhythm Orchestra has grown to become a world-class performance group and, more importantly, has served as an essential vehicle for developing the character and academic skills of our students. The fundamental premise of the KIPP NYC music program is not to prepare students for careers as musicians but rather to help them develop the skills necessary to succeed in school and in the competitive world beyond and to lead happy, engaged, and meaningful lives. We believe that the zest, grit, self-control, social intelligence, hope, love, gratitude, humor, and other character strengths developed in the orchestra are transferable to the other academic disciplines such as reading and math. More importantly, these skills and character strengths can be transferred to the KIPPsters' lives. We have seen the orchestra help countless students turn their lives around. Furthermore, we believe that music education should be available to all students, not just those students with previous experience or demonstrated talent. Talent is not a prerequisite for KIPP NYC music programs; any KIPP NYC student who wants to can participate. Based on the success of the KIPP String and Rhythm Orchestra, all KIPP NYC schools will offer music education as an integral part of the academic and character development curriculum.

Responsibilities: About the KIPP NYC Music Fellowship The KIPP NYC Music Fellowship will prepare teachers of music to develop large, high-quality performing groups and to use music as a vehicle for developing students' character and academic skills. Music Fellows will work with master KIPP NYC teachers, conductors, and musical directors and will develop the knowledge, skills, and personal qualities to prepare them to lead KIPP NYC music programs in subsequent years. The KIPP NYC Music Fellowship is a full-time, one-year, paid fellowship. Music Fellows will support the music programs of all four KIPP NYC schools and will have direct teaching responsibility. As KIPP NYC grows, the Music Fellowship will serve as a vital pipeline for new music faculty at KIPP NYC schools. Based upon performance during the fellowship and KIPP NYC staffing needs, Music Fellows may be invited to join KIPP NYC in a full-time teaching position and should be eager to lead their own KIPP NYC Music Programs the year following their fellowship.

Qualifications: The KIPP NYC Music Fellowship is looking for outstandingly talented people who want to be teachers of music-teachers who will build large, world-class performing groups and create programs that are focused on character development and open to any interested child. KIPP NYC Music Fellows should be able to connect with children, should have training and experience in music and music education, and should be committed to the mission of KIPP NYC and the philosophy of the KIPP NYC music programs. Every KIPP NYC Music Fellow will pledge to welcome all students who want to participate in their music programs, regardless of talent or experience, throughout their teaching careers.
