More information about this job: Overview: KIPP NYC is the family of all KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) programming in New York City and includes four KIPP public middle schools (KIPP Academy, KIPP STAR, KIPP AMP, and KIPP Infinity) designed to teach students to develop the academic and character skills necessary for success in high school and college, to be self-sufficient in the competitive world beyond, and to build a better tomorrow for themselves and us all (

KIPP to College (KTC) works with the alumni of KIPP Academy (Bronx), KIPP STAR (Harlem), KIPP AMP (Brooklyn), and KIPP Infinity (Harlem/Washington Heights) to empower them for success in college and the world beyond. KTC currently works with over 650 KIPP NYC alumni and eighth graders (
www.kipptocollege.org). KTC offers High School and College Placement, Academic Support, Career Services, Counseling, and Enrichment. Staff members are expected to work out of KIPP NYC's multiple school locations throughout the week. KIPP to College is looking for an enthusiastic, youth-focused individual to join our High School Support Team as a Post-Placement Counselor.
Responsibilities: • Serve as a cluster advisor to a caseload of high school age KIPP alumni, most of whom will be away in boarding schools and community schools, by: o Providing counseling support and academic guidance to alumni; o Tracking the following data: report cards/transcripts, current contact information, all KTC documents, course selection, and financial aid documents; o Maintaining regular contact with alumni through regular phone, email, and other contact; • Travel extensively to support high school age alumni who are enrolled in boarding schools by: o Helping students with the transition to living away from home and adapting to an extremely rigorous academic environment; o Building relationships with school administrators, house parents, etc.; o Delivering services in the areas of counseling, academic support, and career prep to alumni; o Working with students' families to help them engage in the boarding school environment. • Provide direct services to the alumni community across all four school sites, including: o Providing regular one-on-one or group counseling to students and families and crisis intervention as needed; o Conducting focused groups to address student issues; o Offering guidance to colleagues regarding students-in-need; • Uphold KTC's systems, culture, core values, high expectations, and code of conduct (Our Best Selves) by: o Helping KTC to track and share alumni information, while maintaining appropriate student confidentiality, through daily use and maintenance of the KTC Alumni Database.
In addition, all KIPP to College staff commit to the following core responsibilities: • Demonstrate a relentless drive to improve the minds and lives of alumni in and out of school. • Commit to doing whatever it takes, whenever it needs to be done, to empower our alumni to be successful. • Share responsibility for program activities, some of which take place during evenings or Saturdays, including: o Staffing after-school and weekend classes, the Summer Enrichment Program, the Summer Internship Program, and other KTC-related trips and activities; o Serving as a grade level, high school, college, and career advisor; • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues and respond to concerns promptly and thoroughly. • Participate actively in meetings, retreats, and workshops. • Commit to professional growth.
Qualifications: • Zest, grit, hope, love, social intelligence, gratitude, and a sense of humor :). • Possess a passion for the mission of KIPP NYC. • Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail; outstanding written and oral communication skills. • Extreme flexibility, with a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate high level of responsibility and multiple priorities. • Experience working with adolescents and/or families, particularly in traditionally underserved communities. • Experience with boarding schools or high school placement programs such as Oliver Scholars, A Better Chance, or Prep for Prep, either as a student or as an employee. • Degree in counseling or a related field, with a documented track record of personal and professional success. • Willingness to travel regularly among the four KIPP NYC school sites and to visit students in boarding schools as needed, at least once per year. • Driver's license required.
