The BDO Seidman Litigation and Fraud Investigation Practice is comprised of Certified Public Accountants, Certified Fraud Examiners, former federal law enforcement professionals, specialists in computer forensics and practitioners with experience in industry accounting rulemaking bodies. These professionals provide consulting, testimony and arbitration services in the areas of corporate internal investigations, financial fraud investigations, damage analysis, post-acquisition disputes, professional liability matters, and insurance claims. Clients include major law firms, insurance companies, major corporations, and audit committees at publicly traded companies involved in complex litigation and fraud investigations across business lines. The New York office of BDO Seidman, LLP serves a diverse range of private and publicly owned clients across a comprehensive array of industries including Manufacturing, Technology and Retail. Key Responsibilities:The responsibilities of the Investigative Researcher (IR) position fall into four broad categories: information retrieval, interviewing, analysis and report writing. The IR may also participate in case intake, internal planning and strategy conferences and live and telephonic presentations to clients. Information Retrieval The IR should be an expert on the collection of information on companies, individuals and other topics from a wide range of online and print information resources including: * Media sources e.g. Nexis, Factiva, Bloomberg, etc. The IR should also have knowledge of US and international resources accessible through the Web that are not available via data aggregators such as Nexis. * Records of criminal, civil and regulatory proceedings. The IR should know how to navigate not only "one-stop" products such as
Rapsheets.com and Nexis Public Records but also web-accessible official records from official, authoritative sources. * SEC filings. The IR should be familiar with the various SEC filings, their purposes and the types of information available in them. * Records of corporations, partnerships and other business entities. The IR should have knowledge of idiosyncratic reporting requirements in the major states (Delaware, New York, Texas, Florida, etc.). * Personal reference databases e.g. Autotrack, Choicepoint, Accurint, etc. The IR should be familiar with the laws and regulations relating to the retrieval and transmission of personal data. * Records of real property. The IR should be familiar not only with online sources of information relating to real property transactions but also with the underlying documentation such as deed and mortgage documents. * Other public records available in the US (e.g. bankruptcies, judgments, liens, UCC filings) as well as outside the US (e.g. Canadian SEDAR, Companies House filings, etc.). * Industry-specific, academic and governmental sources of information, such as those accessible through the Dialog database system. In addition, the ideal candidate will be familiar with the New York Public Library in order to take advantage of the offices proximity to this great resource. Interviewing The IR should possess the right skill set for finding information through phone work. The skill set includes the ability to: * Identify high-grade potential sources through research. * Use good phone manners and conversational ability to break the ice and hook sources. * Maximize opportunities to extract information from sources. * Establish a rapport that will make sources available for additional contacts.
The IR may also participate in person-to-person investigative interviews as needed. Analysis The IR should possess sufficient analytical skill and experience to conduct reliable evaluations of information collected through the retrieval process, including the ability to evaluate if information: * Pertains to the correct targets rather than to different but similarly-named targets ("false positives"). * Is complete and from the most up-to-date and authoritative source available. * Comes from a source whose authority or reliability may be suspect.
The IR should be able to assess the internal consistency of information by seeking corroboration from other known facts and identifying gaps, anomalies, inconsistencies and contradictions.
In background checking and due diligence investigations, the IR should be able to spot "red flags" and other risk-relevant information. Report Writing * The IR should possess strong organizational and written/oral communications skills. The IR will draft cogent summaries of the information that has been retrieved and analyzed. * The IR should be familiar enough with legal and financial nomenclature to draft accurate, concise summaries of complex financial transactions and civil litigation, working from original documents. Qualifications: * Four year degree * 3+ years experience in Investigative Research Broad knowledge of public records including civil litigation & SEC documents. * Excellent written and oral communication and information collection skills essential. * High level of online searching skills. *HJ Please note that only those individuals whose qualifications match our current needs will be considered applicants and will receive responses from BDO.
